Steam Deck: Valve's $400 Portable Gaming PC

A New Contender in Portable Gaming
A fresh competitor has arrived in the gaming hardware market. Valve, a leading game distribution company, has today unveiled the Steam Deck, a $399 portable gaming device engineered to bring PC games on the move.
Key Specifications and Features
This handheld console, reminiscent of earlier portable gaming systems, boasts a seven-inch display. It is powered by a quad-core Zen 2 processor and utilizes AMD RDNA 2 graphics, paired with 16GB of RAM.
Internal storage options range from 64GB to 512GB, with the higher capacity model priced at $649. The device’s storage capacity can be expanded using a microSD card.
Seamless Integration with Steam
As the name suggests, the system is specifically designed for Valve’s popular Steam platform. Users simply log in with their existing Steam account to access their game library and friends list. A dedicated Steam button is also included for quick access.
Positioning in the Current Gaming Landscape
Rumors of this system have circulated for a while, and its release coincides with a period of significant change in the gaming industry. Valve aims to surpass the graphical capabilities of Nintendo’s Switch (even the OLED model).
The Steam Deck also seeks to address the challenges faced by cloud gaming services, such as those offered by Microsoft, which currently grapple with issues like latency and other technical hurdles. The Nvidia Shield Portable represents another, though currently less active, competitor in this space.
Controls and Connectivity
The device features a 1280 x 800 touchscreen, complemented by dual trackpads and analog thumb sticks. A built-in gyroscope enables motion-based control within games.
Connectivity is provided through a single USB-C port, used for charging, connecting peripherals, and outputting to external displays. Valve estimates the 40Wh battery will deliver 7-8 hours of gameplay.
Availability and Shipping
Pre-orders for the system are now being accepted, and shipping is scheduled to begin this December, making it available in time for the holiday season.
The Steam Deck represents a significant step for Valve into the realm of hardware, potentially reshaping the portable gaming experience.
