Save OpenOffice Files in Google Docs Online - SMEStorage

The Shift to Cloud-Based Document Storage
As previously discussed in relation to Microsoft’s Office Web Apps, a clear trend exists towards the online storage of document data – utilizing the cloud. This development presents a challenge for conventional Office suites.
While these suites generally offer more robust document editing interfaces, they often lack integrated functionality for seamless document sharing.
OpenOffice and SMEStorage: A Solution for Online Access
OpenOffice, a widely used free office suite, addresses this issue through its support for extensions. A notable extension is provided by SMEStorage, a company focused on facilitating “multi-cloud data access.”
SMEStorage enables the utilization of Google Documents as a platform for online document and file storage.
This integration simplifies access to OpenOffice files from various computing devices.
Key Benefits of the SMEStorage Extension
- Enhanced document accessibility across multiple computers.
- Streamlined document sharing capabilities.
- Leveraging existing Google Documents infrastructure.
Essentially, the extension bridges the gap between the powerful editing features of OpenOffice and the convenience of cloud-based storage.
This allows users to retain control over their document editing experience while benefiting from the collaborative advantages of online access.
Configuring SMEStorage for Use
Prior to utilizing SMEStorage, a setup process is required. This initial configuration demands slightly more effort compared to simpler installations, such as adding a Firefox extension.
The first step involves downloading the MultiCloud File Manager extension from the OpenOffice.org extension repository and completing its installation. Subsequently, navigate to the SMEStorage website and create a new user account.
On the SMEStorage homepage, select the option labeled "I Want to Use Google Docs."

After registration is complete, launch the MultiCloud File Manager extension within OpenOffice.org. A new icon set is available in the suite’s upper left corner; select the leftmost folder icon.

Upon opening the extension, you will be prompted to input your credentials. These are the username and password established during your registration on the SMEStorage website.
Following entry of this information, click OK. The extension will then initiate a connection attempt to Google Documents.

A second login screen will appear once a connection has been successfully established. This serves to verify your Google Documents login details.
Re-enter your Google account information and press OK. The SMEStorage extension will conclude the process of importing your Google Documents information.
Accessing and Modifying Google Documents
The web browser used to view your Google Documents presents files in a hierarchical structure. Locating your documents involves navigating to All Files, then selecting My Google Docs files.
Opening a document is a straightforward process; simply double-click the desired file. A progress indicator will appear as SMEStorage retrieves the file data, after which it will launch within OpenOffice.org.
Editing and Saving Documents
Once opened, you can modify the document using the familiar OpenOffice.org interface. However, saving changes requires utilizing a specific save icon.
This new save icon, integrated into OpenOffice.org by the extension, is positioned adjacent to the new folder icon initially used to access the SMEStorage extension.
Security Considerations
Upon saving, you will be prompted to choose whether or not to encrypt the file during upload.
Encryption is particularly useful when working on public, unsecured wireless networks, providing an added layer of security for your sensitive documents. Otherwise, encryption may not always be necessary.
SMEStorage facilitates a secure and efficient workflow for managing your files within Google Docs.
Limitations
While SMEStorage provides a convenient method for file synchronization, it's important to acknowledge its inherent limitations.
SMEStorage leverages Google Documents solely as a storage location; it does not function as a document editor itself.
Files saved through SMEStorage into Google Documents are inaccessible for direct editing within the Google Documents interface.
This restriction poses no issue for users with OpenOffice installed, but represents a notable constraint of the extension.
The issue stems from incompatibilities in how Google Documents processes files uploaded by external applications.
Workaround
A solution to this limitation involves downloading the desired document to your local computer.
Subsequently, the document can be re-uploaded to Google Documents, with the option to convert it into the native Google Documents format selected during the upload process.
This conversion allows for editing within the Google Documents environment.
A Convenient Solution for OpenOffice.org Users
For individuals who prefer OpenOffice.org and require file synchronization across several devices, SMEStorage presents a highly effective solution.
Seamless Integration and Functionality
The service delivers a robust experience specifically tailored for OpenOffice.org users. The extension integrates effortlessly within the OpenOffice.org suite.
This streamlined integration ensures a smooth workflow, allowing for easy access and management of files across different computers.
SMEStorage stands out as a valuable tool, simplifying the process of keeping documents consistent and up-to-date on multiple systems.
