Upstream Raises $2.75M Seed Round - Professional Networking

The Limitations of Existing Professional Networks

Many individuals maintain a LinkedIn profile, serving as a digital resume and a repository of professional contacts. However, the depth of these connections is often questionable.

Consider how many of your connections you genuinely know, and how frequently you actively engage with them or expand your network through their introductions.

Introducing Upstream: A New Approach to Networking

Alex Taub, co-founder and CEO of Upstream, highlights a key distinction: LinkedIn isn't designed for building genuine relationships. It lacks the environment for consistent, meaningful interaction.

Upstream, a new professional networking platform, recently secured $2.75 million in seed funding, increasing their total funding to $3.25 million.

This funding round was spearheaded by Ibex Investors, with Nicole Priel (who will also join the board) leading the investment. Additional participants included 8-Bit Capital, Human Ventures, NYVP, Converge Venture Partners, and several angel investors.

Differentiating Factors: Beyond the Digital Resume

Taub emphasizes that a LinkedIn network doesn't accurately reflect the strength of real-world relationships. He believes opportunities exist for new companies to better address the evolving needs of professionals.

Upstream distinguishes itself by prioritizing the creation of impactful connections among its members.

Facilitating Meaningful Interactions

The platform achieves this through digital events that begin with a featured speaker, followed by brief, matched breakout sessions lasting five minutes each.

I recently experienced the platform firsthand, presenting at an “Upstream Social” and subsequently connecting with two founders – one located in Brazil and the other in Boston.

Prior to this, U.S. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey served as a guest speaker.

A Unique Combination of Features

The Upstream experience can be described as a blend of LinkedIn, Clubhouse, and Hoppin functionalities.

Miami as a Tech Hub

Upstream, currently pre-revenue, is based in Miami. The company’s founder relocated from New York City during the pandemic.

Taub and his family initially committed to a two-year lease, with plans to reassess their residency in the summer of 2022. They represent a segment of individuals optimistic about the recent growth of the tech sector in Miami, often referred to as the “Magic City.”

The Founding of Upstream

Michael Schonfeld and Taub, both experienced entrepreneurs, previously founded and sold Social Rank. Following this success, they initiated Upstream in October 2020, driven by a personal challenge Taub encountered.

Taub explained his consistent inclination to facilitate connections and assist others in finding skilled professionals. He derives satisfaction from aiding individuals in their career pursuits. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent downturn in the job market dramatically increased the volume of requests for assistance he received.

This surge in demand quickly highlighted a bottleneck: his ability to efficiently process requests and identify suitable connections. The speed at which he could respond and his cognitive capacity became the primary limitations in providing effective support.

Consequently, Upstream initially emerged as a platform where individuals could solicit assistance, with community members offering their support. Currently, the platform hosts over 200 communities – functioning similarly to LinkedIn groups – and boasts a strong retention rate, with approximately 75% of initial event attendees returning for subsequent sessions.

“We’ve essentially created a solution to a problem we ourselves deeply experience,” Taub stated. “Our personal need for this type of tool fuels our conviction that we are uniquely positioned to develop it effectively.”
