United Airlines Accelerates Starlink In-Flight Wi-Fi Rollout

United Airlines recently announced a partnership with Starlink to provide passengers with in-flight internet connectivity. Initial plans indicated testing would begin in early 2025, with service launching later that year.

However, United has expedited its schedule. Testing of the Starlink service is now slated to commence next month.

First Flights and Installation Timeline

The inaugural passenger flight featuring Starlink connectivity will operate this spring, utilizing an Embraer E-175 regional jet.

Linda Jojo, United’s chief customer officer, indicated that the retrofit process for each aircraft is anticipated to take approximately two days. This installation can also be divided over two nights if needed.

United anticipates completing the installation of Starlink across its entire regional fleet by the end of the current year.

Furthermore, the first mainline aircraft – including Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s – are scheduled to receive the Starlink upgrade before the year concludes.

Enhanced In-Flight Experience

The integration of Starlink aims to deliver an in-flight Wi-Fi experience comparable to terrestrial internet access.

This increased bandwidth will enable passengers to stream video content, utilize productivity applications, and engage in live gaming seamlessly.

Benefits for MileagePlus Members

Richard Nunn, CEO of United’s MileagePlus program, emphasized the importance of this upgrade.

He stated that providing Starlink service on as many aircraft as possible is a central focus for the airline this year.

This enhancement is expected to transform the flying experience with United and facilitate new partnerships and benefits for MileagePlus members.
