Waymo & Uber Partnership: Robotaxis in Austin

Robotaxis Now Available in Austin Through Uber

Austin residents utilizing the Uber platform now possess the option of selecting either a Waymo robotaxi or a ride with a human driver.

The official commencement of the “Waymo on Uber” robotaxi service in Austin occurred on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the evolving partnership between the two companies.

Launch Timing and User Choice

This rollout is strategically timed just prior to the start of SXSW, the renowned annual conference encompassing technology, music, film, and comedy, held in Austin.

Uber users requesting a ride will now potentially be matched with a Waymo robotaxi. However, the ability to specifically choose a human-driven vehicle remains available, ensuring user preference is respected.

Importantly, both ride options – robotaxi and traditional – will be offered at equivalent pricing.

From Rivals to Partners

The relationship between Waymo and Uber has undergone a notable transformation in recent years, shifting from intense competition to collaborative efforts.

Autonomous vehicles operated by Waymo have been integrated into the Uber app in Phoenix since October 2023.

Last year saw an expansion of this partnership, outlining plans for a dedicated “Waymo on Uber” robotaxi service in both Austin and Atlanta, initially slated for 2025. (The Atlanta launch is still pending.)

Defining Roles in the Autonomous Vehicle Landscape

The structure of the “Waymo on Uber” service provides insight into how each company envisions its role within the developing autonomous vehicle industry.

Waymo will assume responsibility for critical functions including vehicle testing, roadside assistance, and specific aspects of rider support.

Uber will concentrate on fleet management, encompassing vehicle cleaning, maintenance, inspections, charging, and depot operations. This will be facilitated through Avomo, formerly known as Moove Cars.

In 2021, Uber acquired a minority stake (30%) in the European firm Moove Cars – distinct from Moove, which manages Waymo’s AV fleet in Phoenix.

Uber's Shift in Strategy

Prior to 2020, Uber was independently developing its own autonomous vehicle technology through its Uber ATG division.

Following a series of challenges, including legal disputes with Waymo and a tragic incident involving an autonomous test vehicle, Uber divested Uber ATG in a complex transaction with Aurora.

Subsequent to these events, Uber reached a settlement with Waymo, paving the way for future collaboration.

Expanding Partnerships in the Robotaxi Market

Over the past two years, Uber has been actively strengthening its position in the emerging robotaxi market through strategic partnerships with companies like Waymo.

Currently, Uber collaborates with 14 autonomous vehicle companies spanning ride-hailing, delivery, and trucking – several of which are already operating commercially.

In December, Uber initiated robotaxi services with WeRide in Abu Dhabi, and maintains commercial agreements with sidewalk delivery bot companies including Avride, Cartken, and Serve Robotics.
