Several Uber drivers in the Delhi–NCR area have shared experiences with TechCrunch, detailing instances of rider misconduct. These include threats of unsubstantiated complaints regarding driver behavior, which could result in penalties or account suspension.

One driver, requesting anonymity to protect their account, explained that some passengers, particularly late at night, demand deviations from the navigation system’s recommended route. Refusal to comply can lead to threats of false reporting.

Driver Perspectives on the New Feature

Drivers believe the in-app video recording feature offers a means of self-protection. It provides potential evidence in the event of disputes. However, some express concern about Uber’s willingness to support drivers in conflicts with passengers.

Pilot Program Details and Geographic Scope

Access to these recordings is restricted; neither drivers nor Uber personnel can view them unless a user voluntarily shares the footage as part of a safety report.

Recordings that are not shared are automatically deleted after one week.

Expansion of Safety Features

This video recording tool complements Uber’s existing in-app audio recording feature, which was launched in India in 2023. Initial video recording tests were conducted in the U.S. in 2022, with subsequent availability in Canada and Brazil.
