UBCO 2x2 Adventure Bike Review: Is This Utility Bike Right For You?

Exploring the Ubco 2X2 Adventure Bike

Relocating to Auckland, New Zealand – a city characterized by challenging terrain and limited public transportation options – sparked my curiosity regarding e-bikes.

However, significant demand coupled with rapidly increasing costs presented obstacles to acquiring these desirable vehicles within Aotearoa, also known as the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Discovering Ubco

This situation changed upon discovering Ubco, a New Zealand-based startup specializing in electric utility bikes, which recently secured $10 million in funding from investors.

I was given the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the Ubco 2X2 Adventure Bike over a period of almost a month.

While I may not perfectly represent Ubco’s core demographic, I endeavored to utilize the bike in accordance with its intended purpose.

I loaded it with substantial weight, simulating deliveries such as books, and imagining items like garlic bread, mail, and packages.

Designed for Utility

The Ubco 2X2 Adventure Bike is primarily engineered for urban utility riding, with the added capability of venturing off-road, which I later tested extensively.

The company’s primary offering is the Ubco 2X2 Work Bike, an electric dirt bike initially conceived to assist agricultural workers.

The recent capital infusion received in June will facilitate expansion into existing sectors like food delivery, postal services, and last-mile logistics.

Furthermore, it will support the growth of a commercial subscription model and drive sales increases within the United States.

Ubco in Action

Domino’s delivery personnel in Auckland, and reportedly in the U.K., are utilizing Ubco bikes for delivering pizzas.

The company also maintains a diverse portfolio of national clients, including New Zealand Post, the Defense Force, the Department of Conservation, and Pāmu (Landcorp Farming Limited).

Numerous local restaurants and stores are also benefiting from Ubco’s solutions.

ubco 2x2 adventure bike review: utility that shredsPersonal Delivery and Initial Setup

The CEO and co-founder, Timothy Allan, personally delivered the bike from Ubco’s headquarters in Tauranga. The delivery took place on a bright, sunny day, and I received a detailed explanation of the bike’s features and operation, including charging procedures.

Mr. Allan assisted me in downloading the Ubco application to connect my smartphone to the bike. This app provides several functions, notably the ability to activate beginner mode, which limits the speed to approximately 20 miles per hour.

I noted this feature for inclusion in this review, though my initial intention was to immediately test the bike’s maximum speed of 30 miles per hour.

Upon reaching that speed, the experience proved to be exceptionally enjoyable. While objectivity is key, the bike offers a remarkably smooth and satisfying ride. The following details explain why:

Appearance

The Adventure Bike is available in a standard white finish and features 17×2.75-inch multiuse tires mounted on aluminum rims. Both the tires and rims meet Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance standards.

My test model included Maori-inspired decals adorning the frame, paying homage to the indigenous population of New Zealand.

The bike measures approximately 41 inches in height, with a seat height of 32 inches. Its overall length, from wheel to wheel, is around 72 inches.

The Adventure Bike is designed to accommodate a total weight, including the rider, of approximately 330 pounds. Both a 6’2” male partner and I, at 5’7”, were able to ride comfortably, only requiring adjustments to the wide rearview mirrors extending from the handlebars.

It’s important to note that this bike is engineered for single-rider operation.

ubco 2x2 adventure bike review: utility that shredsA small cargo rack is positioned above the rear wheel. This rack serves to mount the license plate – as these bikes are often classified as mopeds requiring registration – and can also carry additional items.

While I didn’t test it, the rack appears capable of securely holding at least five pizza boxes when fastened with a bungee cord.

The rack is also compatible with saddlebags. Ubco offers the Pannier Back Pack, a weather-resistant roll-top cargo bag priced at $189, which integrates seamlessly and provides a generous 5.28-gallon capacity.

Beyond accessories, the bike’s alloy frame is notably lightweight and features a step-through design. This design element is particularly appealing, allowing for easy mounting and dismounting and contributing to a feeling of agility.

Parking regulations will vary by location, but in my area, the bike can be parked on the street or in designated parking spaces, rather than on sidewalks.

A kickstand provides stability when parked, and a front wheel lock deters simple theft. However, given its relatively light weight of 145 pounds, it could potentially be loaded into a truck bed.

The bike’s aesthetic was consistently praised during my extended test period. Numerous professionals and cycling enthusiasts commented favorably on its design, aligning with Ubco’s target demographic.

Rideability

The bicycle’s low weight contributes to effortless starts and easy balance acquisition. Positioning the battery centrally within the frame, near the rider’s feet, provides excellent stability and a low center of gravity.

This bike’s light construction presents both advantages and disadvantages. Maneuvering through turns is remarkably simple, however, on exposed roads during windy conditions, a degree of instability was noticeable – though this may have been exacerbated by proximity to large trucks. Its lightness also prompted a slight feeling of vulnerability when sharing the road with larger vehicles, compared to utilizing dedicated bike lanes.

Rapid acceleration is achieved through a fully electronic throttle, even on inclines, thanks to the high-torque geared drivetrain. This system incorporates dual 1 kW Flux2 motors, featuring sealed bearings, active heat management, and active moisture venting – crucial features given the local climate.

A surprising benefit was the acceleration sound, which emulates a gas-powered dirt bike but with a muted, electronic quality. I hadn’t fully appreciated the role of auditory feedback in gauging speed until experiencing the Ubco.

The braking system exhibited a degree of sensitivity. This is likely due to the combined operation of hydraulic and regenerative braking mechanisms. A passive regenerative braking system also contributes, automatically slowing the bike during coasting, particularly noticeable on steep descents.

ubco 2x2 adventure bike review: utility that shredsThe front suspension, offering 130 mm of travel, and the rear suspension, with 120 mm, both utilize coil springs coupled with hydraulic dampers, and feature adjustable preload and rebound settings. Essentially, the suspension performance is exceptional. Even intentional impacts, such as riding off curbs and over bumps, were barely perceptible.

To evaluate its off-road performance, the bike was tested in Cornwall Park, ridden at speed across grass, navigating around trees, and traversing roots and rocks, including performing controlled turns. The experience was enjoyable, and complete control was maintained. This explains the appeal of the Work Bike to agricultural users.

The bike’s utility as a delivery vehicle was assessed by loading the saddlebags with books and groceries. The ride remained pleasant, although initial cornering required some adjustment to maintain balance.

Pricing and Value Proposition

Determining the Ubco Adventure Bike’s value requires consideration beyond simple bike category comparisons, as it doesn’t fit neatly into existing classifications. Comparable electric mopeds, such as the Lexmoto Yadea or Vespa Elettrica, typically range in price from $2,400 to $7,000.

Electric dirt bikes, like models from KTM or Alta Motors, can cost between $6,000 and $11,000. Recently, Cake, a Swedish electric motorbike manufacturer, released the Makka – a city-focused model – priced at $3,500. While visually similar to the Ubco, the Makka is somewhat smaller in stature.

Ubco Adventure Bike Costs

The Ubco Adventure Bike is priced at $6,999 with a 2.1 kW power supply, and $7,499 for the 3.1 kW version. Considering its versatility, this pricing positions it in the mid-range for similar utility bikes.

Potential buyers, particularly those intending to use the bike for work purposes, may be eligible for tax write-offs. Investing in a durable, high-quality bike capable of handling demanding tasks is crucial, and Ubco delivers on this front. Beyond its practical utility, the bike incorporates advanced technology, which will be discussed further.

Longevity and Sustainability

Ubco projects a service life of 10 to 15 years, contingent upon usage patterns. The bike’s lifespan can be extended through over-the-air software updates, component replacements, and complete refurbishments.

The company actively promotes product stewardship, encouraging customers to return end-of-life bikes for responsible recycling and component reuse.

Availability and Purchasing Options

Currently, purchasing an Ubco Adventure Bike generally involves a preorder, although some stock may be available at local dealerships. Orders placed now are estimated to ship by September for customers in the United States.

Supply chain disruptions, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, continue to impact delivery timelines. A $1,000 deposit is required to secure a preorder.

Subscription Model

Ubco also offers a subscription model, primarily geared towards enterprise clients with pricing determined individually. A pilot program providing subscriptions to individual riders is underway in Auckland and Tauranga, New Zealand, with plans for global expansion.

These individual subscriptions are anticipated to begin around NZD $300 per month for a 36-month commitment.

Range Capabilities

The Adventure Bike offers a choice between two battery options: a 2.1 kWh pack providing approximately 40 to 54 miles of range, and a larger 3.1 kWh pack extending that to 60 to 80 miles.

A sophisticated management system, designated “Scotty,” is employed to oversee the battery’s performance and ensure operational safety in real-time. The battery itself is constructed using 18650 lithium-ion cells, sealed with alloy and featuring a venting system for use, and is rated for up to 500 charge cycles.

Ubco has designed these batteries with end-of-life disassembly in mind, promoting responsible recycling practices.

ubco 2x2 adventure bike review: utility that shredsUtilizing the included 10 amp alloy fast charger, a full battery recharge takes between four and six hours. Charging can be performed with the battery installed in the bike, simply by connecting to a standard power outlet.

Alternatively, the battery can be easily unlocked and removed for charging elsewhere, although it is relatively heavy. It's worth noting that the charging process generates audible noise.

During testing, a charging frequency of every two to three days was typical. However, actual charging needs will vary based on usage patterns and environmental conditions.

Cold weather, such as experienced during Auckland’s winter, can reduce battery life, as can traversing hilly terrain. A delivery professional, for example, would likely require nightly charging.

The removable battery offers flexibility; it can be brought indoors for charging at work or other locations, allowing for convenient top-ups throughout the day.

Tech Features

Vehicle Management System

Ubco’s vehicles operate utilizing a system known as Cerebro, a comprehensive vehicle management system. This system integrates all electronic and electrical functionalities, enabling control and updates through Bluetooth connectivity.

Ubco prioritizes sustainability, designing for end-of-life considerations. Consequently, the CAN bus is isolated, facilitating the straightforward integration of future CAN devices.

Considering the bike’s substantial weight and the potential for use by gig economy workers in urban environments, a key question arose: How can theft be prevented when the vehicle is parked in public spaces, given the impracticality of carrying it to higher floors?

The bike features a wheel-locking mechanism, significantly hindering unauthorized removal. Should a theft occur, Ubco can track the vehicle thanks to integrated telemetry – a hardwired SIM card. This provides valuable data for location tracking, servicing, theft recovery, safety monitoring, and route planning.

While initially designed for fleet management through Ubco’s enterprise subscriptions, this VMS architecture offers broader applications, including enhanced security. Although telemetry can be disabled, it is standard with subscriptions and allows users to monitor their bike’s location via the app.

Display

ubco 2x2 adventure bike review: utility that shredsAn LCD display, positioned on the handlebar, presents information such as speed and power levels. The handlebars also incorporate switch controls for managing high/low beams, indicators, and the horn.

The indicator switches were somewhat stiff, occasionally resulting in accidental horn activation. A dedicated smartphone mount on the handlebars would be a beneficial addition, allowing for convenient navigation. Relying on audio directions from Google Maps felt less secure and efficient.

Powering On

The vehicle can be powered on using a keyless fob, either by pressing the button on the fob itself or the corresponding button on the handlebars. It’s worth noting that the fob’s button exhibits considerable sensitivity.

On several occasions, the fob button was inadvertently activated while in a pocket with other items, causing the vehicle to shut down during operation. While this didn’t occur in hazardous situations, it’s a factor to be mindful of.

App Functionality

The app enables pairing with smartphones, including those of multiple users. Through the app, ride settings can be adjusted via learner or restricted modes. It also allows remote control of the bike and lights, modification of displayed metrics, and monitoring of battery life, speed, and motor temperature.

Essentially, the app replicates all the information presented on the dashboard. However, I personally did not find a strong need to utilize it during testing.

Lighting System

The LED headlights are continuously illuminated when the vehicle is powered on, with selectable high and low beam options. Peripheral parking lights are also included, all designed for easy disassembly at the vehicle’s end of life.

LED lights are also incorporated for rear illumination, braking, and number plate visibility, alongside DOT-approved indicator lights.

Additional Features

Beyond the primary functionalities, the 2X2 includes a field kit. This kit is securely attached to the lift-up seat and provides a user manual alongside the necessary tools for both initial setup and ongoing maintenance.

Typically, a new Ubco bike arrives in a box requiring a limited number of steps for preparation before riding. Furthermore, Ubco offers an UBCO University course dedicated to guiding users through the setup process.

Alternatively, purchasing through an Ubco dealer provides the convenience of having the bike unpacked and fully assembled upon collection.

Servicing and Upkeep

Ongoing maintenance is facilitated through a monthly subscription service. Ubco maintains a network of qualified technicians strategically located in regions where their bikes are sold, ensuring accessibility for repairs.

Should an authorized mechanic not be readily available, Ubco’s central headquarters will collaborate directly with customers to provide assistance and facilitate repairs. Specific details regarding the size of Ubco’s authorized technician network were not disclosed.

Observing the prevalence of delivery riders in New York City, often utilizing makeshift solutions like oven mitts secured to handlebars for warmth, highlights the 2X2’s practical advantages.

This bike is capable of carrying substantial loads for delivery purposes, exhibits impressive speed and agility in urban traffic, and is remarkably user-friendly.

The subscription model, particularly appealing to businesses, positions this as an excellent urban utility vehicle. It demonstrates resilience in diverse weather conditions, having already proven its capability in rain and mud.

This suggests a strong potential for success even in the challenging conditions of a Northern city winter. For recreational riders seeking both on- and off-road adventures, the 2X2 also presents a durable and enjoyable consumer option for extended use.
