Twitter's New Safety Feature: Remove Followers Without Blocking

Twitter Introduces New Follower Removal Feature
Twitter revealed yesterday that it is currently evaluating a new capability on its web platform. This feature enables users to eliminate followers without resorting to the more definitive action of blocking them.
There are instances where individuals desire to prevent a follower from viewing their posts without initiating a block. A direct block is readily apparent to the blocked user if they visit the blocker’s profile, potentially creating safety concerns.
How the New Feature Works
A select group of Twitter users participating in this test can now remove a follower by accessing their profile. They can then view their follower list and select a three-dot icon adjacent to the follow button.
From the resulting drop-down menu, the option “remove this follower” is available. It’s important to note that this functionality isn’t yet universally accessible to all users.
Previous Methods and Future Developments
In the past, users employed a workaround to achieve a similar “soft block” effect. This involved blocking and then unblocking a user, which would remove them from the follower list.
The current test phase focuses solely on removing followers from the user’s own list. For accounts with a substantial number of followers, locating a specific individual within the list could prove challenging.
However, according to app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, Twitter is also developing the ability to remove a follower directly from their profile, expanding the functionality beyond the user’s own follower list.
Focus on User Safety and Privacy
This development demonstrates Twitter’s ongoing commitment to enhancing user experience, particularly in the realm of web safety.
Last week, the platform unveiled a collection of privacy tools under development. These included the follower removal feature, alongside options to archive tweets after specified durations (30, 60, or 90 days), conceal liked tweets, and exit conversations.
While tools like Semiphemeral already offer automated tweet deletion and unliking capabilities, integrating these features directly into the Twitter app could empower users with greater control over their online presence.
This would be achieved without the need to share their data with external developers, bolstering overall privacy.
