Twitter Spaces Co-Hosts: Now Available!

Twitter Enhances Spaces with Co-Host Feature

Though Fleets proved to be short-lived, Twitter’s development teams remain dedicated to innovating within Spaces, the platform’s live audio room functionality.

Initial Launch and Expansion of Spaces

Twitter initially launched Spaces as a limited test last year. The feature, modeled after Clubhouse, was then made available to a wider audience – specifically users with a minimum of 600 followers – in May.

Introducing Co-Hosts for Improved Moderation

Now, Twitter is empowering Space hosts with the ability to designate up to two co-hosts. These co-hosts can be invited to assist in managing the audio room.

A Space can now accommodate one primary host, two co-hosts, and a maximum of ten speakers. The addition of co-hosts is intended to streamline the moderation process, enabling more efficient speaker vetting and participant management.

Strategic Placement and Discovery of Spaces

With the discontinuation of Fleets, Twitter’s Spaces currently occupy a prominent position above the main timeline within the Twitter app. This placement, reminiscent of Instagram’s Stories, is designed to attract user attention.

Furthermore, Twitter has begun implementing a dedicated tab to facilitate the discovery of live Spaces. This centralized location surfaces ongoing audio rooms in real-time.

The Rise of Live Audio Chat Rooms

Following the success of Clubhouse, numerous major applications integrated live audio chat rooms into their platforms.

  • In June, Spotify introduced Greenroom, an independent application supporting voice events for up to 1,000 participants.
  • Facebook also launched its own version, Live Audio Rooms, in June.
  • Discord, a well-established voice chat platform, added similar event channels in March.

Twitter responded to this trend with Spaces. Unlike Fleets, however, the company appears committed to the continued development and support of this feature.
