Twitter's Spaces Recordings: Expanding Access and Enhancing Features

Twitter is continuing development on Spaces Recordings, a functionality designed to allow hosts to distribute audio recordings of previous Spaces sessions alongside associated tweets.

Hosts who share these recordings now have access to data detailing both the number of live attendees and the number of subsequent replays.

Continued Testing and Future Rollout

According to a Twitter representative, the much-anticipated feature will remain within a closed testing phase for the immediate future.

However, the testing group has been broadened on several occasions since the initial launch, and a wider release is planned.

Recording Indicators and Editing Capabilities

During a live Space recording, participants will observe a “Rec” button accompanied by a red indicator.

Hosts sharing recordings will be able to adjust the starting point, eliminating any periods of silence that may occur before the discussion begins.

Listeners of recorded Spaces will have access to information regarding who participated in the conversation, mirroring the experience of a live session.

Benefits for Listeners and Hosts

These enhancements provide value to listeners by enabling asynchronous engagement with content they might have missed.

For hosts, the replay functionality facilitates audience growth and expands reach.

Clubhouse introduced a comparable feature, Replay, in November, allowing users to download audio for editing and potential podcast distribution.

Since June, Twitter has permitted users to download their Spaces audio files for up to 30 days.

Spaces as a Core Twitter Feature and Moderation Challenges

Spaces has become a prominent element of the Twitter experience, even securing a central position within the mobile application.

Despite its growth, the live audio feature has encountered obstacles.

Twitter Spaces users have recently reported encountering objectionable content, including Spaces with racially offensive titles that persisted even after being flagged.

Similar moderation difficulties have been experienced by other live audio platforms, such as Clubhouse.

Twitter has not yet outlined any specific plans to augment its Spaces moderation procedures beyond the current reporting mechanisms.

Twitter's Response to Moderation Concerns

“We’re exploring more proactive detection and working on evaluating and developing new moderation options,” stated a Twitter spokesperson to TechCrunch.

Spaces is an iterative product and as more people use it, we’ll continue to learn, thoughtfully listen and make improvements based on feedback.”
