Twitter Spaces Now Open to Everyone: Host Your Own Live Audio Conversation

Twitter Spaces Now Available to All Users

Following a period of phased rollout, Twitter has announced that its live audio chatroom feature, Twitter Spaces, is now universally accessible to all users on both iOS and Android platforms.

Initial Access Restrictions

Previously, the ability to host a Space was restricted to accounts possessing a minimum of 600 followers. This limitation was implemented based on findings that accounts with established audiences were more likely to cultivate positive and engaging experiences within Spaces.

Universal Access and Launching a Space

Currently, Twitter is extending the hosting capability to all mobile users of the Twitter app. Initiating a Space is now achievable by simply tapping the Compose button, the same button typically used for composing new tweets.

Ongoing Feature Development

Twitter had been evaluating a dedicated tab within the app specifically for Spaces. However, a widespread release of this feature has not yet occurred.

Users participating in the beta program for Communities, another new Twitter feature, will observe the Communities button occupying the central position in the app’s navigation bar instead.

The dedicated Spaces tab has been expanded to a larger group of iOS users in English-speaking regions, but remains unavailable on Android at this time.

Recent Updates and Enhancements

Since its initial beta launch last year, Twitter has been actively refining and improving Spaces. Recent additions include the capacity for hosts to designate up to two co-hosts and accommodate up to ten speakers, facilitating larger and more effectively moderated events.

The discontinuation of Twitter’s Stories feature, known as Fleets, this summer has positioned Spaces as the sole prominent feature displayed in the top row of the Twitter mobile application.

Competitive Landscape

The introduction of Spaces coincided with a surge in audio-based social networking platforms, largely inspired by the initial success of Clubhouse during the pandemic.

Consequently, Spaces now competes with a growing number of similar offerings, including Facebook’s Live Audio Rooms, Spotify Greenroom, Discord, Reddit, and Public.com, among others.
