Twitter Super Follows: Monetize Your Tweets with Paid Subscriptions

Twitter Launches Super Follows: A New Subscription Feature

Beginning today, Twitter is initiating the rollout of Super Follows, its new premium subscription service, following the opening of applications in June.

First unveiled in February, this feature enables users to subscribe to accounts they admire for a recurring monthly fee, granting them access to exclusive content. For content creators, Super Follows represent a valuable addition to the growing range of monetization opportunities available across various social media platforms.

Subscription Pricing and Content Access

Accounts meeting the eligibility criteria can establish the subscription price for Super Follows, choosing between $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99 per month – pricing structures similar to those found with paid newsletters. Creators can then designate specific tweets as exclusive to subscribers, while still maintaining regular engagement with their broader, non-paying follower base.

This badge appears in replies, enhancing the visibility of interactions between followers and the accounts they choose to support.

For accounts with Super Follows enabled, a dedicated button will be prominently displayed on their profile page, indicating the subscription option.

Eligibility and Rollout Details

Currently, access to Super Follows is limited to those who have applied and are on a waitlist. The feature is accessible through the Monetization section within the app’s sidebar.

To qualify, users must be located in the U.S., have a minimum of 10,000 followers, and have published at least 25 tweets in the preceding month.

The initial rollout of Super Follows is available to iOS Twitter users in the U.S. and Canada, with broader global availability planned for the coming weeks. Support for Android and desktop platforms is currently under development and expected “soon.”

Revenue Sharing and Fees

Twitter has outlined its revenue sharing model for Super Follows income. Standard in-app purchase fees, typically 30%, levied by Apple or Google will apply. However, Twitter will only collect a 3% commission on earnings up to $50,000 – a significant benefit for emerging creators. Beyond this threshold, Twitter’s commission will increase to 20%.

Other Monetization Efforts

Super Follows isn’t Twitter’s first venture into monetization. In May, the platform introduced Tip Jar, allowing accounts to receive one-time payments via integrations with Cash App and other payment services. This feature is currently limited to a select group of users, including “creators, journalists, experts, and nonprofits.”

Last week also saw the launch of Ticketed Spaces, a paid audio room feature initially available to users who applied in June. The fee structure for Ticketed Spaces mirrors that of Super Follows, with creators able to set ticket prices ranging from $1 to $999.

A Period of Product Development

These developments represent a surge in activity from Twitter, following a period of relative product stagnation. The past year has witnessed significant changes, including the introduction and subsequent discontinuation of Fleets, as well as improvements to anti-abuse features.

Enabling users to charge for exclusive content marks a substantial shift for Twitter, particularly given its previous reluctance to alter its core functionality. This move is also a significant entry into the competitive creator economy, as platforms increasingly provide tools for users to generate income through content creation – fostering loyalty and driving revenue.
