Twitter Introduces NFT Profile Pictures for Subscribers

Twitter has announced a new functionality enabling users to display their NFTs – non-fungible tokens – as profile pictures. This feature serves as a method for verifying ownership of digital assets residing on the blockchain.

Initial Availability and Platform Support

Initially, NFT Profile Pictures are being released to subscribers of Twitter Blue on iOS devices through the platform’s early access Labs feature. Expansion to Android users and the web is planned for the future.

Despite the initial limitation to iOS, all Twitter users, regardless of their device, will be able to view these new, hexagonally-shaped profile pictures.

Geographic Restrictions

The availability of this feature is currently restricted to select regions. Twitter Blue, and consequently NFT Profile Pictures, are accessible in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Previous Indications and User Behavior

Twitter had previously indicated its intention to integrate NFTs more comprehensively into its platform. Prior to this official feature, many cryptocurrency enthusiasts were already utilizing NFT imagery as their profile pictures.

The company had been exploring methods for authenticating user crypto wallets and confirming ownership of digital assets.

twitter launches nft profile pictures — but only for twitter blue subscribersEarly Plans Revealed

In September, Twitter previewed its plans for NFT integration alongside other updates. The company emphasized how authentication would empower creators to better showcase their work.

Twitter's Perspective on NFTs

A Twitter spokesperson stated that the platform recognizes NFTs as a form of identity and self-expression. They also noted the growing community and active discussions surrounding these digital assets on Twitter.

The spokesperson highlighted that Twitter is a primary destination for conversations about topics people care about, including cryptocurrency and NFTs.

Using the New Feature

Twitter Blue subscribers can change their profile picture as usual. A new option will then appear, allowing them to select an NFT instead.

Connecting a compatible crypto wallet is required to utilize this functionality.

Supported Wallets and NFT Formats

Currently, Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, MetaMask, Ledger Live, Argent, and Trust Wallet are supported. Only JPEG and PNG NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain (ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens) are compatible.

Twitter is investigating support for SVGs, but rendering them is not currently possible.

It’s important to note that only on-chain NFTs are supported; lazy-minted assets from platforms like OpenSea are not eligible.

Exploring NFT Details

Users viewing an NFT profile picture can tap it to access more information about the artwork, its collection, and its history.

Verification status from marketplaces like OpenSea will also be visible.

Broader Integration of Decentralized Technologies

This rollout reflects Twitter’s increasing interest in decentralized technologies. This includes support for Bitcoin tips and the appointment of a Crypto Engineering Lead.

The company previously experimented with minting its own NFTs, which were offered at no cost.

Future Availability

Twitter has not yet determined whether this feature will be extended to non-subscribers. They will assess user feedback and make future updates accordingly.

Note: A temporary outage on OpenSea briefly impacted the launch, but the issue was subsequently resolved.
