Twitter Newsletters: Integration Following Revue Acquisition

Just two days after announcing the purchase of Revue, a newsletter platform, Twitter has already initiated the process of incorporating the service directly into the Twitter.com website. It appears that "Newsletters" will shortly be added to Twitter’s sidebar navigation, appearing alongside existing options such as Bookmarks, Moments, Twitter Ads, and others. The company is also preparing a method to introduce this new product to Twitter users, offering them an additional avenue to connect with their audience and generate income from their contributions.

These discoveries, and others, were made by Jane Manchun Wong, a well-known reverse engineer, who examined the Twitter.com website to determine what the company has planned for its recent acquisition.

Wong uncovered a promotional message currently under development, which indicates that Twitter will soon be highlighting several benefits of Revue, including the ability to create and schedule newsletters, incorporate tweets, import existing email lists, track engagement metrics, and earn revenue from subscribers. While the messaging is still in the early stages of testing—and even contained a typographical error—it suggests Twitter’s broader strategy to integrate Revue with the Twitter platform, enabling influential users to effectively monetize their reach.

Currently, the “Find Out More” button within the promotional message directs Twitter users to the Revue website, as discovered by Wong.

Furthermore, Wong observed that Twitter is establishing “Newsletters” as a new navigation choice within the Twitter sidebar menu. However, this option is not yet featured on the primary menu alongside options like Explore, Notifications, Messages, or Bookmarks; instead, it is located within the submenu accessed through the three-dot “More” link.

This close integration between Revue and Twitter’s core platform could potentially provide the company with a significant competitive edge in the newsletter market—particularly given that Twitter has already alluded to using its new audio feature, Twitter Spaces, to connect with newsletter subscribers.

In its initial announcement, Twitter mentioned “new settings for writers to host conversations” with their readership. This likely signifies that Twitter users will be able to not only publish newsletters using the new Twitter product but also monetize their current follower base, attract new readers through Twitter’s integrated tools, and then maintain ongoing engagement with their audience through audio discussions in Spaces. Coupled with the reduction of the paid newsletter fee to 5%, many writers are now carefully evaluating the potential advantages offered by Twitter. The primary concern for some may be Twitter’s historical record of not fully realizing the potential of its acquisitions.

Twitter has not issued a comment regarding Wong’s findings, and it is understood that these features are not currently active on the website. Wong has also reported that she has not yet identified any Revue integrations within the Twitter mobile applications.
