Twitter for Professionals: New Features for Businesses & Creators

Twitter Introduces Professional Accounts for Businesses and Creators

Twitter consistently introduces new features and products. Its newest offering is particularly relevant for those managing accounts for businesses or individuals in the public eye. The platform will soon enable users to opt into professional accounts.

Enhanced Tools for Professional Use

These accounts will provide supplementary tools designed to differentiate profiles. They will also facilitate rapid content promotion through advertising and allow users to leverage Twitter’s forthcoming e-commerce functionalities.

While Twitter has previously implemented monetization options for influential users, it has lacked distinct profile types tailored for businesses. Competitors like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok have long offered such features.

Eligibility and Requirements

Twitter defines a “professional” as anyone utilizing the platform for work-related purposes. To qualify for a professional account, users must demonstrate a clean record, free from repeated guideline violations.

Authenticity is also key. Accounts must feature a genuine name, a descriptive bio, and a recognizable profile picture. Fictional characters, parody accounts, and accounts dedicated to pets are not eligible.

Accessing and Setting Up a Professional Account

Currently, the ability to switch to a professional account isn’t universally available. However, when the option becomes accessible, users will find a “Twitter for Professionals” tab within the sidebar of the Home timeline on the app.

Alternatively, a “Switch to Professional” tab will appear within profile settings. Users will then be prompted to select the category that best represents their work and choose between a business or creator account type.

Upon conversion, users will be guided to follow relevant topics, initiate a tweet promotion as an ad campaign, or customize their profile using available modules. These include modules for “About” information, a “Shop” section, and a “Newsletter” module for those utilizing Revue, Twitter’s newsletter service.

Reverting and Account Type Flexibility

Users can revert to a standard account by navigating to the profile editing section, then selecting “Edit professional profile,” and finally, choosing to switch account types.

Furthermore, users can toggle between business and creator account types, acknowledging that the distinction can sometimes be unclear. Twitter’s FAQ clarifies that only existing accounts can be converted to professional accounts; new accounts cannot be created as professional accounts from the outset.

Currently, Twitter has no plans to implement ad targeting specifically for professional accounts.
