Twitter Spaces Now Open to More Users: Tickets, Reminders & Updates

Twitter Spaces Expands Access and Introduces New Features
Twitter Spaces, the platform’s live audio room functionality, is becoming more widely available. The company announced today that access is being broadened to any account possessing 600 followers or more, encompassing both iOS and Android users.
New Feature Unveiling
Alongside this expansion, Twitter has officially revealed several upcoming features. These include Ticketed Spaces, scheduling capabilities, reminder functionality, co-hosting support, and enhancements to accessibility.
Twitter is also increasing the visibility of Spaces within its platform. Testing is underway to allow users to discover and join Spaces directly from a purple bubble surrounding a profile picture in the Home timeline.
Rationale Behind the Follower Requirement
The 600-follower threshold was determined through prior testing. Accounts meeting this criterion generally experience a positive outcome when hosting live conversations. This is attributed to their larger established audience base.
However, Twitter maintains its intention to eventually grant access to all users. The current rollout is a phased approach towards universal availability.
User Feedback Drives Development
Twitter has adopted a public development approach for Spaces, actively incorporating user feedback into its prioritization of features and updates. Expanded audience management controls have already been implemented based on user requests.
Furthermore, a feature enabling hosts to mute all speakers simultaneously was added, as was the laughing emoji to the reaction options, both responding to direct user feedback.
Focus on Creators and Monetization
The platform’s current focus is shifting towards supporting creators. Twitter Spaces will soon allow for multiple co-hosts. Creators will also gain tools to effectively market and even monetize their live events.
A scheduling feature, with accompanying reminders, will be available in the coming weeks. This will allow users to proactively prepare for Spaces they wish to attend. It also provides creators with a mechanism to promote events and encourage reminder settings.
This development mirrors a similar feature recently announced by Clubhouse, suggesting a convergence in feature sets between the two platforms.
Introducing Ticketed Spaces
While Clubhouse has introduced in-app donations, Twitter is preparing to launch a more conventional revenue model: ticket sales. Hosts will be able to establish ticket prices and limit availability for their Twitter Spaces events.
Access to Ticketed Spaces will initially be granted to a limited group of testers in the coming months. Twitter will retain a small percentage of ticket sales, with the “majority” of revenue going directly to the creators.
Accessibility Improvements
Twitter is also enhancing its live captioning feature, allowing users to pause and customize the captions. Efforts are underway to improve the accuracy of these real-time transcriptions.
Further Discussion
The company will host a Twitter Space today at 1 PM PT to provide a more detailed discussion of these announcements.
