Twitter Spaces API: Now Available in Rebuilt Twitter API

Twitter Enhances API for Twitter Spaces
Changes are being implemented by Twitter to its recently revamped API, enabling third-party developers to create tools and solutions tailored for its audio chatroom feature, Twitter Spaces. The company announced the release of new endpoints designed to support Spaces within the Twitter API v2 framework.
Initial Focus: Spaces Discovery
The primary aim of this initial update is to facilitate the discovery of both live and scheduled Twitter Spaces. Future updates to the API may empower developers to construct more comprehensive tools for Spaces hosts.
Introduced last year, Twitter’s rebuilt API aimed to modernize its developer platform and streamline the integration of support for newer features. The inclusion of Twitter Spaces support exemplifies this ongoing modernization effort.
Expanding Reach of Twitter Spaces
Twitter anticipates that these API updates will inspire developers to create applications that enhance the discoverability of Twitter Spaces for users, both on and off the Twitter platform. This increased visibility could broaden the audience for Spaces and strengthen Twitter’s position in the competitive audio-based social networking market.
Currently, Twitter Spaces competes not only with Clubhouse but also with similar audio chat features offered by platforms like Facebook, Discord, Reddit, Public.com, Spotify, and various smaller social applications.
New API Endpoints
Developers will now have access to two new endpoints: Spaces lookup and Spaces search. These allow for the retrieval of information about live and scheduled Spaces based on criteria such as Space ID, user ID, or keywords.
The Spaces lookup endpoint also provides access to public metadata and metrics related to a Space, including participant count, speaker count, host profile details, detected language, start and scheduled start times, creation time, status, and whether the Space requires a ticket.
Developer Feedback and Future Development
Twitter consulted with developers to determine the most valuable API functionality to prioritize. Developers expressed a desire for features that would improve Spaces discovery and enable reminder setting for upcoming events.
They also indicated interest in tools that would provide Spaces hosts with insights into the performance of their audio chats. However, many of these features are not included in the current API update.
Twitter is currently “exploring” the possibility of adding features like reminder integration and surfacing specific metrics fields, but these ideas have not yet been added to the Developer Platform Roadmap.
No Standalone Client Apps
Twitter clarified that it is not developing API endpoints to support the creation of standalone client applications for Twitter Spaces, as this was not a priority for its developer community.
Availability and Further Information
Developers who have access to the v2 API can begin utilizing the new endpoints immediately. Daniele Bernardi from Twitter’s Spaces team will host a follow-up Spaces event today at 12 PM PT to provide further details about the API update and future plans.
Several developers were already informed of these updates through a weekly Spaces session hosted by Bernardi.
