twitter acquires newsletter platform revue

Twitter is expanding its services to include the newsletter market.
The social networking company has announced the purchase of Revue, a Netherlands-based company that provides a platform for creating and profiting from email newsletters. Although Revue hasn't generated the same level of discussion regarding the future of media as Substack, it already serves prominent media organizations such as Vox Media and The Markup.
While newsletters might not appear to be a natural extension of Twitter’s core functionality, a recent blog post by Product Lead Kayvon Beykpour and VP of Publisher Products Mike Park indicates this move represents a new avenue for Twitter to support writers and publishers who have cultivated an audience through their Twitter activity.
“We aim to simplify the process of connecting creators with their audience, and simultaneously assist readers in finding writers and their work more easily,” Beykpour and Park explained. “We envision numerous possibilities for achieving this, including enabling newsletter sign-ups directly from users’ preferred Twitter accounts, and introducing new tools for writers to engage in discussions with their subscribers. All of this will integrate smoothly within the Twitter experience.”
The acquisition is also intended to provide writers with additional income opportunities. Revue currently enables paid subscriptions, and Beykpour and Park stated that the company will continue to develop further monetization options, “whether it’s expanding revenue possibilities or forming the foundation of a creator’s income.”
They further noted that Twitter will maintain Revue as an independent product, with the existing team continuing to concentrate on “enhancing the tools writers use to produce newsletters, grow their readership, and earn income from their efforts.” The company is also making Revue’s premium features available to all users at no cost and reducing the transaction fee for paid newsletters to 5%.
The specifics of the financial agreement for the acquisition have not been revealed. Data from Crunchbase indicates that Revue previously secured €400,000 in funding from a group of angel investors.
