Twitter Acquires Sphere: Expanding into Group Chat

Twitter Acquires Sphere, a Groups Chat Application

Twitter has completed the acquisition of Sphere, a London-based company known for its groups chat application of the same name. This acquisition represents the latest in a series of strategic initiatives undertaken by the social network to expand and enhance its product portfolio.

Sphere's Background and Previous Ventures

Sphere was established by Tomas Halgas and Nick D’Aloisio. Notably, D’Aloisio previously founded the news summary application, Summly, which was sold to Yahoo for a reported $30 million when he was just 17 years old.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not publicly disclosed by Sphere. However, it is known that the startup had secured at least $30 million in funding, including $11.8 million across its initial two funding rounds.

Confirmation and Rationale Behind the Acquisition

A Twitter spokesperson has officially confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch. Sphere expressed its admiration for Twitter’s increasing focus on community development.

“We have been observing and appreciating Twitter’s growing commitment to community building, evidenced by the launch of Communities, Spaces, and features designed to enhance user safety,” stated Sphere in a blog post.

“Our discussions with the Twitter team further solidified our belief in their dedication to fostering interest-based communities and realizing their substantial potential.”

Future Plans and App Shutdown

As a result of the acquisition, Sphere’s team of approximately 20 employees will be joining Twitter. Consequently, the standalone Sphere application will be discontinued next month.

The startup has not revealed the total number of users or customers it had acquired prior to the acquisition.

Sphere’s Evolution and Core Mission

“Our journey has been both lengthy and rewarding. Initially, Sphere aimed to create a ‘global brain’ facilitating instant knowledge sharing and access,” explained the startup in its blog post.

“We began by developing a marketplace connecting individuals with paid experts worldwide through group chat. However, we discovered that the most valuable interactions occurred within groups where members shared a strong sense of community.”

“Ultimately, our focus shifted to helping individuals discover their ideal communities. This represents a significant opportunity.”

Twitter’s Expansion Strategy

This acquisition aligns with Twitter’s recent, more assertive approach to product expansion. The company previously attempted to acquire Clubhouse and subsequently launched a comparable feature earlier this year.

Furthermore, Twitter has implemented several measures to address and mitigate disruptive behavior on its platform.

It is anticipated that integrating Sphere’s technology and expertise will enable Twitter to improve the functionality and user experience of personal and group messaging within its ecosystem.
