Twitter Acquires Reshuffle Team to Boost API Platform

Twitter Acquires Reshuffle Team to Enhance API Development
Twitter has announced the acquisition of the Reshuffle team in what the company describes as a “strategic acquihire.” This move involves integrating Reshuffle’s personnel into Twitter’s operations, while the startup’s commercial technology will be discontinued.
Reshuffle’s Technology and Team Integration
Reshuffle’s platform facilitated the creation of workflows and connections between systems utilizing various APIs. The entire seven-member team, including co-founders Amir Shevat and Avner Braverman, will now contribute to Twitter’s efforts to modernize its unified API.
Evolution of the Twitter API
The Twitter API 2.0, introduced last year, represents a complete rebuild of the platform, the first major overhaul since 2012. This new version incorporates features previously unavailable, such as conversation threading and enhanced spam filtering.
The redesigned API is structured to enable faster implementation of new features as Twitter itself introduces them. Recent additions include support for features like “hide replies” and tweet annotations.
Expanding API Functionality and Developer Support
Twitter’s API team is focused on developing solutions tailored to diverse developer needs. This includes support for consumer app developers, business and enterprise users, and academic researchers.
In January, access to the API was extended to researchers, with promises of further enhancements to come.
Reshuffle Team’s Immediate Responsibilities
The newly acquired Reshuffle team will immediately focus on accelerating Twitter’s API initiatives and creating improved tools for developers.
Leadership Roles for Reshuffle Founders
Avner Braverman, Reshuffle’s CEO, brings nearly two decades of experience in engineering and consumer-facing technology roles from companies like IBM. He will join Twitter’s Developer Platform team.
Amir Shevat, Reshuffle’s CPO, previously held leadership positions at Twitch, Slack, and Google. He will assume a senior role within the Twitter Developer Platform team.
Twitter’s Commitment to Developer Platform
According to a Twitter blog post co-authored by Bruce Falck and Sonya Penn, the acquisition demonstrates Twitter’s increased investment in its developer platform. The team’s expertise will expedite the development of tools that enhance the value proposition for developers.
Product Wind-Down and Open-Source Commitment
While Reshuffle’s commercial product will cease operations in the coming weeks, the team will continue to maintain its open-source project for the benefit of the developer community.
Recent Acquisitions and Future Strategy
This acquisition is part of a broader trend of acquisitions and “acqui-hires” by Twitter. Recent additions include newsletter platform Revue, teams from Breaker, Squad, and Ueno, and Chroma Labs.
Twitter intends to continue pursuing similar opportunities to expand its teams and accelerate development efforts.
Financial Details and Funding
The financial terms of the Reshuffle acquisition were not disclosed. Reshuffle had previously secured $6.35 million in funding from investors including Cardumen Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with a reported valuation of $11.85 million.
The company plans to continue seeking opportunities to grow through strategic acquisitions.
