Twenty Years of TechCrunch: A Celebration of Tech News

Celebrating Two Decades of TechCrunch

TechCrunch is commemorating its 20th anniversary, a milestone I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand for half of that duration. It has undoubtedly been the most fulfilling professional experience of my career, explaining the swift passage of time.

A Unique Culture

Before indulging in the reminiscence that such an anniversary prompts, I want to emphasize the significance of this occasion. Having previously worked within several large media organizations – including Time Inc., Dow Jones, and Reuters – I can confidently state that the culture at TechCrunch is unparalleled.

It’s a dynamic environment characterized by its contrarian thinking, intelligence, humor, and dedication. Nearly every team member at TechCrunch assumes multiple responsibilities, a common experience for those who have been a part of the organization.

This isn’t simply another media outlet; it’s a hub of curiosity, where a strong sense of brand loyalty and mutual respect thrives. Challenging established norms isn’t merely accepted, it’s actively encouraged.

Access and Impact

This approach has facilitated access to individuals who might otherwise be unreachable. Over the last ten years, TechCrunch has hosted conversations with prominent figures from across the technology landscape.

These include CEOs such as Sam Altman and Evan Spiegel, regulatory officials like Lina Khan, venture capitalists like Marc Andreessen and Serena Williams, and even unexpected guests like Conan O’Brien, Al Gore, and Sanna Marin of Finland.

We’ve engaged with founders pioneering defense technologies, building consumer-focused companies, and successfully selling their software businesses for substantial sums. Our collective team has interviewed thousands of founders and operators whose innovations impact our daily lives.

Through these interactions, we’ve gained insights – and subsequently conveyed them to our readership – regarding the intersection of technology, policy, and ambition in shaping the world.

A Global Perspective

Our reporting has extended beyond traditional office settings, originating from homes, coffee shops, and offices, as well as numerous international locations.

TechCrunch has traveled to cities like Lisbon, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, and Davos, and even to more distant destinations such as Lagos, Nairobi, Hong Kong, and Hangzhou.

Across these cities, we’ve encountered founders who achieved remarkable success and those who faced adversity. We’ve observed the rise of previously unremarkable technologies and the decline of once-promising ventures.

Witnessing Industry Evolution

We’ve documented the birth, maturation, and occasional decline of entire industries. We’ve introduced our audience to startups that grew into trillion-dollar corporations and highlighted innovations that fundamentally altered business models.

These include the advent of subscription services, the gig economy, and, most recently, the consolidation of AI companies. We’ve reported on groundbreaking advancements and also scrutinized those that failed to deliver on their promises.

Continuing Relevance

We remain committed to delivering consistent coverage. Recently, TechCrunch has interviewed the prime minister of Greece and the mayor of San Francisco.

We’ve also broken exclusive stories concerning leading venture capital firms, startup founders, and major technology companies. Our coverage of transportation, startups, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence is highly competitive.

Navigating a Changing Media Landscape

The media industry is currently facing significant challenges, and is among a growing number of sectors undergoing transformation. However, despite predictions of its decline, TechCrunch continues to thrive!

As we enter our third decade, we remain dedicated to breaking important stories, holding those in power accountable, and providing our readers with an early look at the next wave of innovation. Our audience is also expanding.

Gratitude and Future Outlook

Michael Arrington, we thank you for establishing this brand, which has become far more significant than we initially envisioned. We extend our gratitude to all parent companies that have provided support and enabled us to pursue our passion, including Regent.

While TechCrunch’s ownership has evolved, our core mission – to discern valuable information from the noise and deliver impactful stories – remains constant.

Here’s to the wisdom gained from twenty years, and to another twenty years of asking critical questions, helping our readers anticipate future trends, and collaborating with exceptional individuals.

To all who have contributed to this journey – writers, editors, sources, readers, event attendees, speakers, critics, and supporters – thank you for shaping TechCrunch into what it is today: a platform for those who believe in the potential of technology to improve the world, and who trust us to provide honest assessments of its impact. It is a daily privilege.
