TuSimple and DHL Partner for Self-Driving Truck Deal

TuSimple and DHL Supply Chain Partner for Autonomous Truck Integration
TuSimple, a leading developer of self-driving truck technology, has formalized an agreement to integrate its autonomous systems into the operations of DHL Supply Chain. This collaboration signifies a major step forward in the deployment of autonomous trucking solutions within the logistics sector.
As a key component of this partnership, DHL Supply Chain has secured a reservation for 100 autonomous trucks. These vehicles are currently under joint development by TuSimple and Navistar, representing a significant investment in the future of freight transportation.
Expanding Reservation Numbers and Delivery Timeline
The agreement with DHL substantially increases TuSimple’s total truck reservations to 6,875 units. Deliveries of these autonomous trucks are anticipated to commence in 2024, marking a pivotal moment for the company and the industry.
Current Operations and the Autonomous Freight Network
TuSimple is already actively utilizing its self-driving trucks to transport freight for DHL on a daily basis. This ongoing operation covers a route between San Antonio and Dallas, forming a crucial segment of TuSimple’s Autonomous Freight Network (AFN).
While operating in autonomous mode, these trucks maintain the presence of two safety operators within the cab. One operator is positioned behind the wheel, prepared to assume control if necessary, ensuring a safe and reliable operation.
The Components of TuSimple’s Autonomous Freight Network
The AFN is a strategically mapped network of shipping routes and terminals. It is designed specifically for autonomous trucking operations and is projected to span the entire United States by 2024.
This network comprises four essential elements:
- Self-driving trucks: The core of the operation, providing autonomous transportation.
- Digital mapped routes: Precisely mapped routes optimized for autonomous navigation.
- Freight terminals: Designated hubs for efficient loading and unloading.
- Real-time monitoring system: A platform enabling customers to track shipments and monitor autonomous trucking operations.
Currently, TuSimple manages the operation of the trucks and the transportation of goods for its clientele.
Future Plans: Vehicle Sales and Subscription Services
TuSimple’s ultimate objective is to transition to a model of selling its autonomous trucks. This will be accompanied by a subscription service, known as TuSimple Path, providing customers with the necessary support to operate their own autonomous fleets.
According to President and CEO Cheng Lu, the company is presently functioning as its own operator. However, the long-term vision is to evolve into a provider of both autonomous vehicles and associated services.
Scaling Through Vehicle Provision
“This approach is what we believe will enable us to significantly increase the number of vehicles deployed,” Lu stated.
Growing Industry Adoption of the AFN
DHL joins a growing list of companies participating in the TuSimple AFN. Other notable members include UPS, carrier U.S. Xpress, Penske Truck Leasing, and McLane Inc., a supply chain company owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
Network Expansion and Global Ambitions
Launched in 2020, the autonomous freight network currently extends from Arizona to Florida. TuSimple is actively working towards the creation of a comprehensive, nationwide freight transportation network over the coming years.
Furthermore, the company is exploring expansion opportunities in both Europe and Asia. Testing of its autonomous trucks is currently underway in Sweden and at the deepwater port in Shanghai.
Phased Rollout Strategy
TuSimple initially outlined a three-phase rollout plan for the network. The initial phase focused on a service area in the Southwest, where the company already had established operations.
Phase 1, which commenced in 2020 and continued into 2021, encompassed service between Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The network has since been extended to include Florida.
