tt.fm Beta App Launches: A Turntable.fm Competitor

The Re-emergence of a Social Music Concept
It's understandable to feel perplexed by the current situation. Following the developments surrounding this story, and even while actively writing about it, a degree of confusion remains. Turntable, known as tt.fm, distinct from the previously existing and recently relaunched social music application Turntable.fm, has announced the availability of its service on iOS, Android, and desktop platforms.
A Brief History of Turntable.fm
The original Turntable.fm ceased operations in 2013, shifting its focus towards a live music platform. This was a disappointing event for many who spent considerable time on the site. However, business strategies evolve, and companies often change direction.
The sense of nostalgia for the original platform was powerfully rekindled during the recent period of widespread isolation. Individuals, particularly those familiar with the original service but not fully engaged with platforms like Twitch, began to express a desire for its return. Consequently, founder Billy Chasen initiated plans for a revival. The current beta version serves as a nostalgic experience, incorporating key modifications such as utilizing YouTube streaming to address copyright concerns. It functions effectively and provides an enjoyable user experience. Furthermore, the company has secured $7.5 million in funding to facilitate its modernization.
The Rise of TT.fm
Concurrently, a former employee of Turntable.fm embarked on developing an alternative version of the service. Prioritizing mobile accessibility and employing a crowdfunding approach, TT.fm capitalized on the wave of nostalgia to raise $500,000 in funding, as announced in March.
This service is now launching in beta. It is currently available for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, or accessible through a web browser. Similar to Turntable.fm, tt.fm relies on integrations with external music services. Initially, it supports Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud, with YouTube integration planned for future implementation.
Similarities and Distinctions
As illustrated above, the platform mirrors the format of Turntable.fm, featuring comparable yet distinct visual elements. DJs perform songs on a virtual stage, and the audience expresses their approval through interactive reactions. A key differentiator for the new offering is its focus on hosting DJ sets performed by established artists.
“Dedicated fans of the original Turntable are enthusiastic about returning to a vibrant social music experience and have requested features such as live DJ performances, networking opportunities with fellow music enthusiasts, music sharing capabilities, and a thriving online music community,” stated Founder and CEO Joseph Perla in a press release.
The Future of Social Music
For those who enjoyed Turntable.fm, the sudden availability of two similar services presents a welcome abundance of options. However, the critical question is whether these platforms can expand beyond a niche audience and achieve sustained success in the competitive media landscape of 2021. It is plausible that there is space for a single iteration of Turntable.fm.
However, the presence of two competing services adds an element of uncertainty to an already unusual situation, suggesting that further developments are likely.
