Connectify: Turn Your Windows 7 Laptop into a WiFi Hotspot

Creating a WiFi Hotspot with Connectify
There are instances in computing where establishing a WiFi hotspot is necessary to enable other wireless devices to access an internet connection. This article details how Connectify can transform a Windows 7 computer into a functional WiFi hotspot.
A common scenario involves a location with only a single Ethernet port available – such as a hotel room, office space, or meeting room – requiring internet access to be shared among multiple users or devices. Connectify serves as a lightweight and user-friendly utility designed to facilitate this process, securely converting your Windows 7 machine into a WiFi hotspot.
Please note that Connectify is compatible with Windows 7 Home and subsequent versions; it does not support the Starter edition.
About Connectify
The installation process is both rapid and straightforward. Upon completion, the application is accessible via its icon in the Taskbar.
Within the settings menu, you can define a name for your WiFi network and establish a password for secure access. You'll also be prompted to select the type of internet connection you intend to share. Options include LAN, VirtualBox Host-Only, Wireless Network Connection, or no internet sharing at all. Initiate the hotspot by clicking the "Start Hotspot" button.

The application will then begin running, allowing you to connect other wireless computers and devices to the newly created network.

Connecting a Device
With Connectify active on the Windows 7 laptop, we demonstrate a connection from an XP laptop. Open the Wireless Networks list, and the newly established hotspot will be visible for connection.

You will be asked to enter the Network Key (password) you previously configured in Connectify. Input the password twice and then select "Connect".

Allow a moment for the network to acquire an address.

The XP machine is now successfully connected to the "Geek-fi" network created on the Windows 7 computer.

Monitoring Connected Devices
Returning to the Windows 7 machine, you can view a list of currently connected devices. The application also maintains a record of previously connected devices.

Right-clicking the Connectify icon in the system tray reveals various operational options.

During testing, the signal strength and connection speed were found to be adequate, though potentially slower than usual. Performance will vary depending on the hardware used for sending and receiving the signal. However, overall, Connectify is a capable solution for quickly creating a WiFi hotspot. If you require a simple and secure method for sharing your Windows 7 wireless connection, Connectify effectively fulfills this need.
