The Rise of Digital Identity Verification and Emerging Privacy Concerns

The practice of verifying a user’s identity online, often through submitting a government-issued ID and a selfie, has become increasingly prevalent. This is typically required for accessing websites, applications, or completing specific purchases.

Currently, the implementation of age-verification regulations in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia, and numerous other regions is fostering growth within the ID-checking industry. These companies are tasked with confirming user age for access to age-restricted online content.

Privacy Risks Associated with Traditional ID Verification

Uploading sensitive personal data, such as identity documents and facial images, to company servers has raised significant concerns among privacy advocates. There are fears that this information could be vulnerable to data breaches, theft, or unauthorized monetization.

TruSources: A New Approach to Secure Identity Verification

A new company, TruSources, is addressing these privacy and security challenges with a novel solution. Their technology performs age-verification and identity checks directly on the user’s device, ensuring that sensitive information never leaves the user’s control.

TruSources is participating in Startup Battlefield and will be demonstrating its technology at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, scheduled for October 27-29 at Moscone West in San Francisco.

The Technology Behind TruSources

Sanjay Krishnamurthy, founder and chief technology officer of TruSources, previously contributed to the core encryption engine at WhatsApp. He explains that the initial impetus for developing this technology was to combat scams, which frequently rely on deceiving individuals into revealing personal information.

The company has created both a deepfake-detection application and a “know your customer” (KYC) application. These tools can verify a user’s identity in real-time, directly on their device.

Unlike conventional age- and identity-checking services, TruSources does not upload user data to its servers. Instead, it utilizes a custom machine learning model integrated into its applications.

This model identifies patterns based on a proprietary dataset developed by TruSources to detect deepfakes and fraudulent identification documents.

Integration and Applications of TruSources Technology

TruSources’ technology can be seamlessly integrated into existing applications and websites requiring age-verification compliance.

Furthermore, it can be incorporated into corporate single-sign-on systems, enabling employees to access multiple work applications with a single set of credentials.

The applications can also generate a QR code for offline verification, such as confirming age at a bar without presenting physical identification.

Benefits for Businesses and Users

Krishnamurthy emphasizes that his technology will assist organizations subject to age-verification and identity checks in adhering to KYC regulations. It simultaneously protects companies from the risks associated with collecting and storing sensitive identity documents, while also safeguarding user privacy.

“Several countries now require age verification for all applications, creating a significant challenge. Companies are hesitant to collect IDs globally due to complex legal ramifications,” Krishnamurthy stated.

Looking Ahead

While still in its early stages, TruSources distinguishes itself as a leading startup focused on identity checks and age verification, prioritizing user privacy and security.
