Trump Criticizes EU Regulation of US Tech Giants
Former President Donald Trump has voiced strong disapproval regarding the regulatory actions taken by European Union authorities against prominent American technology firms.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump publicly criticized EU regulators. He characterized the EU’s legal challenges to companies like Google, Meta, and Apple as constituting “a form of taxation,” as reported by Bloomberg.
Apple's Tax Dispute with the EU
Trump specifically referenced a legal defeat suffered by Apple in a case concerning a €13 billion tax obligation in Ireland.
The EU’s Court of Justice, located in Luxembourg, determined in 2024 that Apple had received unlawful tax advantages in Ireland spanning the years 1999 to 2014. Consequently, the company was mandated to remit outstanding taxes.
Potential for Increased Tension
Analysts at Bloomberg anticipate that this represents the initial stage of a potentially contentious exchange between the Trump administration and the EU.
Such a dynamic could persist throughout the duration of a second Trump term, should he be re-elected.
Ongoing Investigations Under the Digital Markets Act
Currently, Google, Meta, and Apple are all subjects of investigations.
These investigations center on possible infringements of the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
The Digital Markets Act aims to ensure fair competition within digital markets.
It targets large online platforms, often referred to as “gatekeepers,” to prevent anti-competitive practices.
