Trump Returns to Twitter: Possible Concession?

The nation has experienced a turbulent period, yet President Trump resumed activity on his preferred social media platform after a mere 12 hours.

Delivering a notably prepared three-minute statement, the president strongly condemned the “despicable attack” on the Capitol. Trump stated that those who breached the Capitol building had “disgraced the foundation of American democracy,” and cautioned that those responsible would “face consequences.”

The day prior, President Trump had addressed a gathering of his supporters at a “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House, urging them to proceed towards Congress. This led to a violent disturbance that interrupted the process of certifying election outcomes, caused significant damage to the building, and resulted in at least four fatalities. During the unfolding events, Trump expressed support for the rioters in a video shared on Twitter, describing them as “exceptional” and conveying his affection.

Following yesterday’s video, Twitter temporarily restricted access to Trump’s account, requiring the removal of several posts before restoring his access. Facebook subsequently suspended the president’s account for the duration of his remaining term. Trump’s standing with Twitter is now precarious—the company indicated that his account could be permanently suspended should he violate their policies again.

In the recent video, Trump appeared to recognize that his previous actions had been excessive. Having investigated “all legitimate options” to remain in power, he stepped back from a long-standing effort to challenge the decision of American voters. However, it remains entirely plausible, and even probable, that he will change his position, continue spreading false information about the election, and resume his efforts to invalidate the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

President Trump has demonstrated similar reversals on numerous occasions throughout his presidency, typically after exceeding boundaries that even members of his own party find objectionable. Yesterday’s events clearly exemplified this pattern, and even prompted unusual repercussions from the social media platforms he frequently uses for communication.

Trump also signaled an acceptance of his defeat for the first time, asserting that he will peacefully relinquish office on January 20. “I am now concentrating on guaranteeing a calm, organized, and uninterrupted transfer of power,” Trump announced.
