Trump Administration Fires Cybersecurity Board Members

Department of Homeland Security Dismisses Advisory Board Members
Following Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States on Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed members of multiple advisory committees of their removal.
Impact on the Cyber Safety Review Board
Sources with knowledge of the board’s operations have confirmed to TechCrunch that the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) is among those affected. This board comprised cybersecurity professionals from both the private sector and governmental organizations.
An individual familiar with the CSRB, who requested anonymity, voiced criticism regarding the decision to terminate the committees.
Concerns Regarding National Security
“The abrupt dismissal of all DHS advisory boards, without considering the potential consequences, demonstrated a significant lack of foresight,” the source stated. “Halting the CSRB’s reviews amidst ongoing cyberattacks originating from China targeting our vital infrastructure represents a perilous error in judgment.”
The source emphasized the necessity of learning from incidents like “Salt Typhoon” and bolstering national defenses. They suggested that the lack of prioritization given to these issues by the new administration is noteworthy.
“Understanding the threat is paramount to effective defense, and the CSRB was instrumental in providing that understanding,” they added.
Focus on Recent Cyber Breaches
The individual was referencing the CSRB’s ongoing investigation into recent, substantial security breaches at several U.S. telecommunications companies. These breaches are attributed to hackers associated with the Chinese government.
Valerie Mongello, a spokesperson for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), directed TechCrunch’s inquiry to the DHS for comment.
DHS Statement on Committee Terminations
In response to the request, DHS released a statement from a senior official who wished to remain unnamed.
“The Department of Homeland Security will no longer support any advisory committee that promotes agendas which attempt to undermine its national security mission, the President’s agenda, or the Constitutional rights of American citizens,” the statement declared. The DHS spokesperson declined to identify themselves.
A letter sent to CSRB members stated, “In accordance with the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) dedication to eliminating resource misuse and ensuring DHS activities prioritize our national security, I am directing the termination of all current memberships on advisory committees within DHS, effective immediately.”
Questioning the Rationale
Another source familiar with the situation highlighted the apparent contradiction in the stated rationale, noting that “it’s noteworthy that the justification centers on ‘misuse of resources’ given that all advisory board members receive a salary of $0.”
Expert Reaction and Calls for Qualified Replacements
Katie Moussouris, a cybersecurity expert with over twenty years of experience and a former CSRB member, expressed her belief that “individuals serving as government advisors should be evaluated based on their expertise and qualifications, rather than their political affiliations.”
She conveyed hope that any resulting vacancies on these critical advisory boards would be promptly filled by the most qualified candidates.
CSRB’s Previous Work on Microsoft Email Breaches
The CSRB previously investigated the compromise of U.S. government email systems facilitated through Microsoft. This incident was also allegedly perpetrated by Chinese government-linked hackers.
In March of the previous year, the committee published a report on this incident, which received widespread acclaim within the cybersecurity community.
Broader Impact Across DHS Advisory Committees
Reportedly, other DHS advisory committees affected by this decision include those focused on artificial intelligence, telecommunications, science and technology, and emergency preparedness.
