Toyota's First EV: Range, Solar Roof & Details

Toyota Unveils the Production bZ4X Electric SUV
In April of the previous year, Toyota initially previewed the bZ4X. This vehicle represents the first in a planned series of seven fully electric models, collectively branded “Beyond Zero,” slated for release by 2025.
At the time of the initial announcement, details surrounding the bZ4X were limited. Toyota confirmed a collaborative effort with Subaru for the SUV’s development and indicated the inclusion of their forthcoming e-TNGA powertrain.
Powertrain and Performance Details
Toyota will make the bZ4X available in both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. The FWD version utilizes a single 150 kW motor, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds.
According to the WLTC standard, the FWD model, equipped with a 71.4 kWh battery, is projected to achieve a range of approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) on a full charge. It is anticipated that EPA testing will yield a lower range estimate.
It’s important to note that these figures originate from the Japanese model, and specifications for US-market vehicles may differ.
The AWD variant features dual 80kW motors, one for each axle, delivering a combined power output of 160 kW. This configuration allows for a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.7 seconds.
Toyota estimates the range of the AWD model to be 460 kilometers (285 miles) on a single charge. The battery pack is integrated directly into the vehicle’s chassis in both versions.
This integration serves to lower the SUV’s center of gravity and enhance overall chassis rigidity.
Additional Features and Charging
The bZ4X will support DC fast charging at speeds up to 150 kW, enabling an 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes.
Toyota intends to offer several advanced features for the bZ4X. A notable option is a solar roof, projected to generate enough energy for roughly 1120 miles of driving annually.
Furthermore, a steer-by-wire system, eliminating the traditional mechanical link between the steering wheel and wheels, will be available on select models.
Availability
The bZ4X is scheduled to launch in the US and other global markets in the middle of 2022.
