Marz Raises $5.3M to Revolutionize VFX with AI

MARZ Secures $5.3 Million in Series A Funding
Monsters Aliens Robots Zombies (MARZ), a technology and visual effects company, has successfully closed a $5.3 million Series A funding round. Round13 Capital spearheaded the investment, with significant contributions from Rhino Ventures and Harlo Equity Partners.
The newly acquired capital will be strategically deployed to expand MARZ’s core visual effects operations. Furthermore, it will accelerate the advancement of their innovative ‘AI for VFX’ technology solutions.
Addressing VFX Industry Challenges with AI
Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Toronto, MARZ is focused on developing AI-powered solutions. These solutions are designed to tackle the growing challenges within the entertainment industry.
Specifically, they aim to alleviate the VFX capacity shortage. This shortage has been exacerbated by the proliferation of streaming services and the subsequent surge in demand for on-demand content. VFX are increasingly crucial for attracting and retaining subscribers.
Strategic Allocation of Funds
“The funds received will be instrumental in accelerating our research and development efforts concerning our ‘AI for VFX’ solutions,” explained Jonathan Bronfman, co-founder and co-president of MARZ, in correspondence with TechCrunch. “Currently, we have two distinct AI products under development.”
A significant portion of the investment will be dedicated to recruiting key personnel for the research, engineering, and product teams. Enhancements to hardware capabilities and infrastructure are also planned.
These improvements will expedite AI research and development cycles and boost capacity efficiency for both AI products.
Synergistic Growth in VFX Services
While the primary focus is on proprietary AI solutions, Bronfman emphasized that the funding will also support the expansion of MARZ’s traditional VFX services.
He highlighted the synergistic relationship between the AI business and the established VFX services, creating a mutually beneficial growth dynamic.
Proven Track Record and Expanding Team
Over its first three years, MARZ has contributed to 88 projects. Notable credits include Marvel’s “WandaVision,” HBO’s “Watchmen,” Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” and Apple TV+’s “Invasion.”
The company’s project volume has steadily increased: 13 projects in year one, 21 in year two, and 54 in year three.
MARZ has experienced substantial employee growth, increasing from 45 in 2019 to 194 currently. Plans are in place to reach a team of 300 within the next year.
Over a quarter of the existing workforce is dedicated to machine learning and artificial intelligence.
A Globally Distributed, Remote-First Workforce
Although based in Toronto, MARZ operates as a remote-first organization. Its workforce is geographically diverse, spanning cities worldwide.
These locations include Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, Madrid, Los Angeles, Melbourne, London, Moscow, Mumbai, and Mexico City.
Democratizing VFX Through Innovation
“Our core mission is to democratize VFX, empowering creatives globally to produce ambitious video content,” stated Bronfman. “This includes streaming services, Hollywood studios, gaming developers, metaverse creators, and independent content creators seeking to integrate VFX into their work.”
The company intends to develop a comprehensive suite of automated, AI-driven products applicable to both VFX and gaming technologies.
For the Hollywood sector, these products will facilitate the creation of more complex and visually stunning content. For individual consumers, MARZ aims to make VFX accessible for the very first time.
Industry Recognition and Investor Confidence
“MARZ is a rapidly expanding VFX studio known for its technological prowess and ability to deliver exceptional results within tight deadlines,” commented Brahm Klar, a partner at Round13 Capital. “We are excited to partner with MARZ and Canada’s leading investors to build upon their remarkable achievements.”
This partnership will enable MARZ to further solidify its position as a leader in the evolving landscape of visual effects and AI-driven content creation.
