Tonal Strength Training System: New Hardware & Workouts

Tonal 2: A New Generation of Connected Strength Training

The connected fitness landscape has faced challenges in the years following the pandemic. While prominent companies like Peloton and Mirror have encountered difficulties, several smaller businesses, including Tonal, have demonstrated resilience.

At CES 2025, the Bay Area-based company unveiled its latest innovation: the Tonal 2 strength training system.

Core Functionality and Design Updates

The fundamental principle behind Tonal 2 remains consistent with its 2015 predecessor. It features a wall-mounted exercise platform integrated with adjustable weight bars.

However, several enhancements have been implemented. These include a more refined black and chrome aesthetic, alongside a more robust frame construction.

Enhanced Hardware Specifications

The integrated camera has been upgraded for improved performance. Furthermore, the cables have been reinforced, exhibiting a 75% increase in strength according to Tonal’s data.

The system now accommodates resistance levels up to 250 pounds. Weight adjustments are dynamically made based on factors such as exercise type and user performance.

For instance, if the system detects user fatigue, it will automatically reduce the weight. Conversely, it will increase resistance during strength-building phases.

Improvements to the onboard motors contribute to a smoother and more refined workout experience.

Advanced Features and Workout Programs

The upgraded camera plays a crucial role in analyzing movement patterns. It delivers real-time coaching cues, mirroring the guidance of a personal trainer.

This functionality aims to promote safe training, improve exercise form, and optimize results.

Complementing these advancements are new HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts.

Availability and Pricing

While the changes represent an evolution rather than a revolution after nine years, Tonal 2 offers a compelling option. Existing users may not find the upgrade essential unless their original unit is no longer functional.

Nevertheless, the continued success of Tonal in the post-pandemic market is noteworthy.

The Tonal 2 system is currently available for purchase at a price of $4,000.
