Playdate Preorders: Handheld Gaming Returns for $179

Playdate: Pricing, Release Date, and New Features Revealed
Panic, the company renowned for its software creations, is venturing into hardware with the Playdate. This innovative handheld gaming console now has a confirmed price point and shipping timeframe, alongside several unexpected features unveiled since its initial announcement in 2019.
Console Details and Game Season
The Playdate will be available for $179 and is slated to ship later this year. It will launch with a unique “season” of 24 games, delivered incrementally over a 12-week period. Furthermore, a charming speaker dock and a streamlined, low-code game creation platform have been added to the package.
Initial reports on the Playdate surfaced over two years ago, captivating audiences with its minimalist aesthetic, distinctive crank control, and monochromatic display. Anticipation has been building ever since. The combination of Panic’s exceptional design expertise and Teenage Engineering’s inventive hardware capabilities promises a delightful user experience.
Expanded Game Library and Distribution
Originally, a 12-game season was planned, but the developers have since amassed a larger collection of titles. The initial game offering has now expanded to 24 exclusive games for the Playdate. Many of these titles creatively utilize the crank mechanic in engaging ways, such as simulating a turntable, opening a virtual door, or performing surfing maneuvers.
The team is still evaluating future game distribution methods. Potential options include additional seasons or individual game releases. A new game from Lucas Pope, the creator of acclaimed indie titles, would undoubtedly be highly sought after.
Introducing Pulp: A Lo-Fi Game Development Platform
The introduction of Pulp, a new, accessible game development platform, suggests the possibility of self-publishing for Playdate games. This web-based tool simplifies game creation with pre-defined settings for controls and actions, potentially becoming a streamlined alternative to tools like Twine.
The Playdate Dock: A Stylish Accessory
A dedicated dock accessory has also been announced, designed to showcase the Playdate on a desk. This speaker-equipped dock, matching the console’s lemony yellow color, serves as a magnetic charging cradle. It activates a stationary mode featuring a clock and music player, with curated relaxing tunes from Poolsuite.fm. The dock even includes pen holders, accompanied by a specially designed yellow pen.
Pricing and Positioning
The $179 price tag may give some consumers pause, especially when compared to the cost of a Nintendo 3DS or a Nintendo Switch (when including the dock). However, the Playdate isn’t intended to compete with mainstream gaming consoles. Instead, it offers an unconventional system that embraces originality and delivers a uniquely enjoyable experience.
Order Process and Shipping Details
Customers will receive a one-week notice before pre-orders open. Panic intends to maintain pre-orders open, allowing customers to cancel at any time until their unit ships, rather than closing orders due to limited inventory. Shipping is expected to commence in late 2021, with additional units manufactured and shipped as needed.
A review unit is being requested to provide a comprehensive assessment. However, the timed release and social aspects of the Playdate suggest a shared experience with the broader community.
Note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated a next-month shipping date. The Playdate will ship later in 2021, with pre-orders opening next month.
