Tinder Revives Interactive Event: “Swipe Night” Returns with a Murder Mystery

Tinder is reintroducing “Swipe Night,” its engaging in-app event designed to facilitate connections beyond simple matching and messaging. Following the success of the initial season – an apocalyptic “choose your own adventure” – which attracted over 20 million participants, Tinder is launching a new installment centered around a “whodunit” murder mystery.

Introducing “Swipe Night: Killer Weekend”

The new event, titled “Swipe Night: Killer Weekend,” will commence on November 7th at 6 PM, as announced by the company. This installment will be hosted within Tinder’s Explore section, a hub for social experiences that was first introduced in June.

Explore Section Features

The Explore section already includes features like “Hot Takes,” enabling real-time, speed-dating style chats, and “Passions,” allowing users to connect with others sharing similar interests. “Swipe Night” joins these offerings as a key component of Tinder’s evolving social landscape.

Gameplay Changes and User Involvement

This iteration of “Swipe Night” introduces significant changes to the gameplay. Rather than simply reacting to a pre-defined narrative, users will actively participate as potential suspects in the murder mystery. Players can investigate rooms and examine objects for vital clues.

Suspect Selection and Collaborative Deduction

At the conclusion of each week, participants will select their prime suspect. They will then be paired with another user who chose a different suspect for a “Fast Chat” session. This allows for discussion, clue analysis, and collaborative mystery-solving.

Algorithmic Pairings and Conversation Starters

These pairings are determined algorithmically, considering user profile preferences such as age, gender, and location. The differing suspect choices are intentionally designed to spark conversation, addressing a common challenge in online dating – initiating meaningful interactions.

From Chat to Match

Following the conversation, players have the option to match with their partner if they wish to continue the dialogue beyond the “Swipe Night” experience.

Low-Pressure Compatibility Testing

Tinder believes this low-pressure chat format will facilitate easier compatibility assessment before matching. It offers a more engaging experience than simply sending an initial message that may go unnoticed. Authenticity is also encouraged as users articulate their thoughts and decisions during the game.

Gen Z Engagement and the “Explore” Vision

Kyle Miller, Tinder’s VP of Product, highlights the appeal of this format to younger demographics, particularly Gen Z. He explains that the “Explore” section was created to make Tinder feel “alive, experiential and immersive.”

Combating Monotony and Injecting Novelty

Miller emphasizes the need to move beyond the repetitive cycle of swiping, matching, and chatting. Injecting “fun and novelty” alongside substance is key to capturing Gen Z’s attention.

Expanded Global Availability

“Swipe Night” will be available in 25 global markets this time, a significant expansion from the original U.S.-only launch.

Playable On-Demand

Unlike the first season, which was limited to specific times, this installment will be playable at any time within the Explore section. The experience will remain available even after the initial season concludes.

Replayability and Future Interactive Experiences

Miller notes that users will be able to re-experience episodes and search for additional clues, similar to streaming services. He also suggests the possibility of a catalog of interactive experiences beyond “Swipe Night” in the future.

Boosting User Engagement and Match Rates

These experiences are expected to increase user engagement and improve matching outcomes. The first “Swipe Night” resulted in a 26% increase in matches. Interest in the “true crime” genre is also surging, with a 20% rise in related mentions in Tinder bios since the beginning of the year.

The Cast and Creative Team

“Swipe Night: Killer Weekend” is directed by Sasie Sealy and features a cast of emerging Gen Z actors, including Ashley Ganger, Calvin Seabrooks, Luke Slattery, Francesca Olivia Xuereb, Nozipho Mclean, Ivan Carlo, and Emile Ravenet.

True Crime Trend on Tinder

Over 30,000 Tinder profiles now express a desire to find a “partner in crime,” reflecting the growing popularity of the true crime genre.
