TikTok Updates: Bulk Delete, Report & Block Tools

TikTok Introduces Enhanced Moderation Tools for Creators
TikTok is now implementing a new functionality designed to streamline the management of online interactions for content creators. The platform is releasing updated tools that enable creators to delete comments in bulk and block users more efficiently, moving away from individual comment moderation.
This update could potentially spark debate, as it grants creators the ability to present an image of universally positive reception to their content, even if significant criticism or corrections were initially offered by the wider TikTok community.
A Comparison to Twitter’s Approach
Twitter previously confronted a similar challenge and ultimately adopted a middle-ground strategy. This involved balancing the original poster’s control over conversations with the broader user base’s ability to participate.
Twitter’s “Hidden Replies” feature allows users to minimize disruptive or impolite comments by concealing them behind an additional click. This approach preserves the replies without allowing them to dominate the discussion.
Conversely, TikTok is empowering creators with complete control. This mirrors a strategy similar to Facebook, where users can remove any content from their profile, including comments they deem undesirable.
The Nature of Interaction on TikTok
This decision may be particularly suitable for TikTok, given its primary focus on video-based communication. Features like duets and stitches facilitate reactions and responses to existing content, simultaneously fostering new content creation and enhancing a creator’s visibility.
Duets and stitches are often strategically employed by creators to address differing viewpoints, particularly those bordering on misinformation or considered controversial.
However, this practice can sometimes incite a wave of negative responses directed towards the original video’s creator, leading to instances of trolling and harassment. The justification for such reactions is often subjective and dependent on individual perspectives.
Addressing Creator Wellbeing
TikTok acknowledges that such abuse can be “discouraging.” This has been demonstrably true for some of the platform’s initial stars, including Charli D’Amelio, who rapidly gained prominence with nearly 116 million followers.
D’Amelio has increasingly voiced concerns regarding the drawbacks of her online fame, expressing difficulty in enjoying TikTok due to the escalating criticism she receives. This includes abusive comments, body shaming, and navigating the competitive landscape of influencers.
While the new bulk delete feature doesn’t entirely resolve these issues, it offers creators a means to maintain a more manageable comment section and swiftly block disruptive users, thereby regaining some control over their online presence.
How the New Feature Works
To utilize the new functionality, users can either long-press on a comment or tap the pencil icon located in the upper-left corner to access a menu of options.
From this menu, they can select up to 100 comments or accounts for simultaneous deletion, reporting, or blocking, significantly simplifying the moderation process.
Global Rollout
TikTok has announced that the new feature is initially being released in Great Britain, South Korea, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, and Thailand.
Expansion to additional global markets, including the U.S., is planned over the coming weeks.
