TikTok Testing Direct Tipping Feature for Creators

TikTok Experiments with In-App Tipping for Creators

TikTok is currently evaluating a novel in-app tipping mechanism. This functionality would enable content creators to receive financial support from their audience, extending beyond the existing gifting system utilized during TikTok LIVE streams.

Feature Discovery and Initial Rollout

The company has officially acknowledged that this capability is presently undergoing a restricted trial phase and is not yet universally accessible. Jera Bean, a TikTok creator, initially identified the feature and shared a demonstration video.

This discovery was subsequently publicized by Matt Navarra, a consultant specializing in social media, via Twitter.

Eligibility and Application Process

The showcased video reveals the feature's location within a TikTok account’s settings. It also displays the criteria for participation.

Creators participating in this initial test can request access if they possess a minimum of 100,000 followers and maintain a positive account standing. Upon submitting an application, creators will receive notification regarding approval status.

Approved creators will be provided with a dedicated Tips button on their profile, allowing followers to directly send them payments.

Financial Implications and TikTok’s Role

The Tips page clarifies that all funds received by creators will be transferred to them directly. Currently, TikTok is not deducting any fees from these transactions.

Whether TikTok will implement a commission on creator Tips in the future, should the feature move beyond the testing phase, remains uncertain, though it appears probable.

TikTok’s Statement

A TikTok spokesperson communicated to TechCrunch, “We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience.”

Expanding Monetization Options

This feature represents TikTok’s ongoing commitment to creator monetization. Last year, the platform launched a $200 million fund to support creators in the U.S. and supplement their income.

TikTok also facilitates brand partnerships, sponsorship opportunities, and monetization of live streams. Given this focus on revenue generation, it’s unsurprising that the company is exploring direct payment options.

Competition in the Social Media Landscape

TikTok is not alone in exploring these avenues. Twitter recently introduced its “Tip Jar” feature, offering a similar functionality to a select group of users, including nonprofits, journalists, and content creators.

These direct tipping features position TikTok and Twitter as competitors to platforms like Instagram and YouTube, which already provide established and profitable monetization methods for creators.
