TikTok Experiments with Desktop Streaming: TikTok Live Studio

Imagine being able to view live gameplay from your preferred TikTok personality directly within the TikTok app, rather than switching to platforms like Twitch. TikTok is currently evaluating the feasibility of this by testing a Windows application known as TikTok Live Studio for the past several days, as reported by the platform itself.

Functionality of TikTok Live Studio

Upon downloading and installing the program on a desktop computer, users can log in using their existing TikTok credentials and initiate live streams directly to TikTok Live. The software facilitates real-time interaction with viewers through an integrated chat function. Content can be sourced from a computer, a mobile phone, or a gaming console.

TikTok has informed TechCrunch that, at present, this program is limited to a select number of Western markets and is accessible to only a few thousand users.

Strategic Implications for TikTok

A key advantage for TikTok in exploring this functionality is the potential to encourage creators to remain within the TikTok ecosystem. This could reduce the incentive for them to direct their audience to competing streaming platforms such as Twitch or YouTube Gaming.

Promotional materials released by TikTok suggest a focus on attracting video game streamers. However, in its current testing phase, TikTok Live Studio lacks some of the advanced features commonly found in established broadcast software like OBS or Streamlabs – a natural limitation given its developmental stage.

For instance, while console connectivity is supported, the program currently does not allow for the use of browser windows as a video source, nor does it offer in-stream alerts for tips or new follower notifications.

Testing and Future Development

The primary objective of this test is to observe how creators utilize the software. TikTok has communicated to TechCrunch that a full-scale launch of TikTok Live Studio is not guaranteed; feature testing does not automatically equate to permanent implementation.

Should a wider release occur, TikTok intends to analyze creator usage patterns and refine the software to better align with those needs.

Existing Livestreaming Features

TikTok’s existing livestreaming tools are already enabling creators to generate revenue and grow their audiences. These tools include the ability to receive tips, schedule live events, conduct live Q&A sessions, collaborate with other users in live broadcasts, filter unwanted keywords, and assign moderators.

Currently, TikTok Live Studio allows users to control the enabling of gifting and comments, as well as the implementation of keyword filters. Additional features from the existing livestreaming suite, such as moderator assignment and stream scheduling, may be integrated into a more comprehensive version of the software in the future.

Expanding TikTok’s Reach

This desktop streaming software also presents an opportunity for TikTok to engage a broader desktop user base. A dedicated desktop application is crucial for many creators, as smartphones are often insufficient for simultaneously connecting to a gaming console and streaming live content.

While mobile viewing of game streams is common, the user experience is generally superior on desktop, potentially fostering a habit of using TikTok on computers.
