iPhone 13 Pro & Pro Max: 120Hz Display & Camera Upgrades

Apple Unveils New iPhone Lineup
At a recent virtual event, Apple introduced its latest series of smartphones. Alongside the standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, the company revealed two Pro models boasting enhanced features not available on the base versions.
Naturally, these Pro models command a higher price point. To provide context, the iPhone 13 mini begins at $699, while the iPhone 13 starts at $799. Conversely, the iPhone 13 Pro is priced from $999, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max begins at $1,099.
Display Sizes
The iPhone 13 Pro features a 6.1-inch display, whereas the larger iPhone 13 Pro Max incorporates a 6.7-inch display.
“Our Pro lineup represents the pinnacle of innovation, delivering our most advanced technologies to users who demand the absolute best from their iPhone,” stated Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Distinguishing Features of the iPhone 13 Pro
Choosing the iPhone 13 Pro over the iPhone 13 unlocks a range of premium enhancements. The design receives a subtle refinement, with the Pro models incorporating polished stainless steel bands encircling the phone’s chassis.
Furthermore, three stainless steel rings now adorn the area surrounding the triple camera sensors. The rear of the device is constructed from a matte glass material.
Camera System
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are equipped with three distinct camera sensors on the rear, an increase from the two found on the standard models. In addition to the ultra-wide and wide cameras, a 3x telephoto camera is included.
The wide and ultra-wide cameras themselves also exhibit differences between the Pro and standard models.
Previously, sensor-shift optical image stabilization was exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Now, this technology is implemented across the entire iPhone 13 series.
Essentially, many of the sophisticated camera capabilities previously limited to Pro models are now accessible on the standard iPhone 13.
Cinematic Mode and ProRes
A notable addition is the new cinematic mode, featuring rack focus capabilities. This allows for real-time subject tracking and focus locking. Cinematic mode records footage in Dolby Vision HDR.
Later in the year, users of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will gain the ability to capture ProRes videos.
Key Camera Specifications
- A 77mm telephoto camera offering 3x optical zoom.
- An ultra-wide camera with a ƒ/1.8 aperture, delivering “up to 92% improvement in low-light performance,” according to Apple.
- A wide camera with a ƒ/1.5 aperture, providing “up to 2.2x improvement in low-light performance,” as stated by Apple.
For the first time, Night mode is compatible with all three cameras, simplifying the process of achieving optimal results.
ProMotion Display and Battery Life
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max incorporate a Pro Motion display with a P3 color range. Similar to high-end iPad models, these iPhones feature an adaptive refresh rate.
The display can dynamically adjust up to 120Hz when needed, and lower the refresh rate during tasks like video playback to conserve battery power.
As the largest model in the lineup, the iPhone 13 Pro Max provides extended battery life. Apple claims a battery life 2.5 hours longer than that of the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Performance and Availability
Like the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, the Pro models are powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip. This chip utilizes a 5-nanometer process and contains 15 billion transistors.
It features two high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores. Performance across the lineup is expected to be comparable, although the Pro models benefit from a new 5-core GPU.
Preorders commence on Friday, with availability beginning on September 24. The phones are offered in configurations with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage.
