Chevrolet Silverado EV: A New Electric Pickup

General Motors has officially unveiled the Chevrolet Silverado EV, marking a significant entry into the electric truck segment. This new vehicle boasts a range of up to 400 miles and can deliver as much as 664 horsepower.

Pricing and Availability

The Silverado EV will be available in various trims, starting with a basic work truck edition priced at $39,900. A fully equipped RST First Edition, featuring advanced technology and capabilities, will carry a price tag of $105,000. Production for both models is anticipated to begin in 2023.

Unveiling and GM's EV Strategy

The vehicle was presented by General Motors CEO Mary Barra during a virtual keynote at CES 2022. This announcement coincided with the unveiling of several other mass-market electric vehicles and GM’s plans for autonomous vehicle sales by mid-decade.

Positioning within GM's Electric Lineup

The Silverado EV represents the third electric truck announced by General Motors, following the Hummer EV and the Sierra Denali. While details on the Denali remain limited, the Silverado EV is expected to share many components with the impressive Hummer EV.

Silverado EV: Trims and Features

Two initial versions of the 2024 Silverado EV WT will be offered at launch. These include the affordable Work Truck (WT) and the premium RST First Edition.

Work Truck (WT) Edition

The $39,900 Work Truck edition will provide a robust 510 HP and 615 lb-ft of torque. It will also offer an 8,000-pound towing capacity. The interior will be functional, differing significantly from the higher-end RST model.

RST First Edition

The RST First Edition is equipped with a wealth of technological advancements. It incorporates four-wheel steering and an adaptable air-ride suspension, mirroring features found in the Hummer EV. Inside, a large 17-inch LCD touchscreen dominates the center console, complemented by an 11-inch driver display and a head-up display. Chevy’s Advanced Trailering System is also included.

Storage and Convenience

The RST edition enhances storage with a removable panel between the cab and bed. It also features a larger center console and a fixed-glass roof for an enhanced driving experience.

Charging and Power Capabilities

Both the WT and RST editions support DC fast charging at 350 kW, enabling a range gain of 100 miles in just 10 minutes. The Silverado EV can also function as a 110v generator, providing a maximum output of 10.2 kW, exceeding the Ford F-150 Lightning’s 9.6 kW.

Competition and Market Context

The introduction of the Silverado EV follows Ford’s launch of the F-150 Lightning in May 2021. Ford quickly experienced high demand, prompting a doubling of production targets to 150,000 vehicles annually by mid-2023.

Production Timeline

General Motors plans to initiate production of the $39,900 Silverado Work Truck in spring 2023. The RST First Edition is scheduled to follow in fall 2023. Additional trim levels, including an off-road-focused Trail Boss edition, are anticipated in the future.

Underlying Technology and Design

The Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV represent a departure from traditional pickup truck construction. While the Ford utilizes a body-on-frame design, the Silverado EV employs a unibody structure, merging the body and frame into a single unit. This approach, also used by Tesla’s Cybertruck, can enhance rigidity but may impact towing and cargo capacities.

Expanding Electric Truck Market

The electric truck market is rapidly evolving, with competitors like Rivian already delivering their R1T pickup. The Tesla Cybertruck remains a future contender, though its production timeline remains uncertain.

GM's Evolution in Electric Vehicles

General Motors’ commitment to electric vehicles has grown over time. Starting with the Chevy Volt and progressing to the Chevy Bolt, the company unveiled its Ultium platform in 2020. Since then, GM has announced a range of electric models, including the Hummer EV, GMC Sierra Denali, Cadillac Lyriq, and Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox.
