Jeep Recon: The All-Electric Off-Roader is Here

The Arrival of the All-Electric Jeep Recon

The Jeep Recon, a fully electric SUV boasting an anticipated range of 250 miles, has arrived, and its emergence has been a surprise. The following details explain the reasons why.

Jeep's Initial EV Plans

Three years prior, Jeep revealed its strategy for reshaping its vehicle lineup with the introduction of three electric vehicles. Two of these were specifically intended for the North American market by 2024. The all-electric Jeep Recon and Wagoneer S models were central to the brand’s ambition to lead the electrified SUV sector.

At that time, Stellantis, the parent company, aimed for EVs to represent half of Jeep’s sales volume in North America, and the entirety of its sales in Europe, by the year 2030.

Delays and Shifting Strategies

The Wagoneer S ultimately launched in early 2025, while the Jeep Recon experienced a period of uncertainty.

Concurrently, many automotive manufacturers, including Stellantis – which also controls Chrysler and Ram – began to revise their aggressive EV plans as demand did not align with initial projections. Ram, for instance, cancelled its plans for a battery-electric full-size pickup in September, choosing instead to concentrate on the extended-range Ram 1500 REV.

A month later, Stellantis announced a $13 billion investment to strengthen its U.S. manufacturing capabilities over the next four years, as part of a broader revitalization plan under its new CEO. However, electrification was no longer the primary focus of this substantial financial commitment.

The Recon's Survival

Despite these shifts, the Jeep Recon – with its design cues reminiscent of the Wrangler – has persevered.

The company has confirmed that the 2026 Jeep Recon, with a starting price of $65,000 (excluding the $1,995 destination charge), will commence production next year at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico. Initial availability will be in the United States and Canada, followed by a subsequent global rollout.

Off-Road Capabilities

The Recon is a four-wheel-drive EV that proudly carries the “Trail Rated” badge, a designation highly regarded by off-road enthusiasts.

Consequently, the vehicle is equipped as standard with the brand’s Selec-Terrain traction management system, underbody shielding, tow hooks, specialized off-road tires, and an e-locker axle technology. This technology enables drivers to electronically lock the differential, ensuring torque is distributed to both rear wheels – a valuable feature for off-road driving.

“With the Jeep Recon, we’re demonstrating that electrification is not only compatible with off-road performance, but can actually enhance it, providing instant torque, precise control, and a quieter, more connected driving experience that is uniquely Jeep,” stated brand CEO Bob Broderdorf.

Charging System Adoption

The company also announced on Tuesday its adoption of the North American Charging System for certain EVs, including the Jeep Recon. However, the Recon will not directly integrate the NACS system. Owners will require a NACS adapter to access the extensive network of Tesla Supercharger stations.

The powertrain, featuring a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack, generates 650 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque – a potent combination for off-road adventures. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph is achieved in just 3.6 seconds.

The practical application of such rapid acceleration in a Jeep remains a question.

Market Acceptance

However, the more significant question – one that will only be answered upon the vehicle’s release – is whether American SUV buyers will embrace it, particularly considering the base model of the iconic 2026 Wrangler starts at approximately $49,895.

Key Features and Design

The Recon’s substantial torque and power, combined with a modern interior featuring a 14.5-inch horizontal touchscreen (the largest ever offered in a Jeep), alongside classic design elements like Wrangler-inspired LED taillamps, a swing gate, and removable doors, may prove to be compelling.
