Tesla FSD Beta Expansion: Open to Drivers with Good Records

Tesla to Evaluate FSD Beta Access Based on Driver Data

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has announced that the company will leverage individual driving data to qualify owners for access to the newest beta release of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.

FSD Beta v10.0.1 Rollout

According to a recent tweet from Musk, the FSD Beta v10.0.1 software update, currently available to a limited group of Tesla owners, will be expanded to a broader audience beginning on September 24.

Those who have purchased the Full Self-Driving capability, which is priced at $10,000, will be able to request access to the beta version via a dedicated “beta request button.”

Data Collection and Access Criteria

Drivers opting for the beta software will be prompted to grant Tesla permission to analyze their driving habits through the company’s insurance assessment tool.

Musk stated that access will be granted to drivers demonstrating positive driving behavior for a consecutive seven-day period.

Understanding Tesla’s Driver Assistance Systems

All Tesla vehicles are equipped with a standard driver assistance system known as Autopilot.

For an additional $10,000, owners can purchase Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, which Musk has consistently positioned as a pathway toward complete autonomous driving.

The FSD option has been available for several years, with its price increasing and functionality expanding over time.

Current Capabilities of FSD

Despite its name, Tesla’s FSD does not currently provide full self-driving capabilities.

The system includes features like Summon, which enables remote parking, and Navigate on Autopilot, an active guidance system for highway driving, including lane changes and navigating interchanges.

FSD Beta Performance and Limitations

The latest FSD Beta aims to automate driving in both highway and urban environments.

However, it remains a Level 2 driver assistance system, requiring constant driver attention, hands-on wheel control, and the ability to intervene at any moment.

Recent user-submitted videos showcasing the beta software reveal varying levels of performance. Some demonstrate successful navigation in city settings, while others depict instances where drivers had to regain control due to issues such as missed turns, proximity to curbs, and unexpected maneuvers.

One video even showed the vehicle unexpectedly swerving toward pedestrians.
