Tesla Megapacks Coming to Texas | Utility-Scale Battery Storage

Tesla Expands Battery Storage into Texas
Elon Musk is extending his large-scale battery initiatives to Texas. A Tesla subsidiary, operating discreetly, has been developing a 100 MW energy storage installation in Angleton, Texas.
This development is based on an application submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Texas, alongside supporting documentation. Bloomberg initially reported on these documents, establishing a connection between a previously unidentified subsidiary and Tesla.
Gambit Energy Storage Project Details
Gambit Energy Storage LLC filed an application with the Public Utilities Commission of Texas in June of the previous year. This regulatory body oversees electric utilities within the state.
As detailed in the application, reviewed by TechCrunch, Gambit intends to offer wholesale electricity and grid-balancing services to the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid. The project is situated in Angleton, a city approximately 50 miles west of Galveston, close to the Gulf Coast.
According to Bloomberg’s reporting, the anticipated commercial operation date for the project is June 1st.
Texas Grid Resilience and Recent Events
The Texas power grid has faced intense scrutiny since mid-February. An exceptional Arctic cold wave caused a peak loss of 46,000 MW of power – exceeding one-third of the system’s total generating capacity.
This event resulted in millions of Texans experiencing sub-freezing conditions for several days. Following the crisis, the ERCOT board dismissed its CEO, and the PUCT chair resigned.
Legislators are currently considering substantial revisions to Texas’s power market operations.
While Tesla currently holds contracts for battery storage systems with California utilities Southern California Edison and PG&E, this marks the company’s first significant project in another state.
