Tesla's Loss, Zoox's Gain

Zoox Questions Tesla's Robotaxi Timeline and Recruits Key Tesla Engineer
During TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, Jesse Levinson, co-founder and CTO of Zoox, expressed skepticism regarding Tesla’s plans to launch a robotaxi ride-hailing service in California, or elsewhere, within the coming year.
Levinson stated that the core challenge lies in the current state of Tesla’s technology, asserting that it is not yet sufficiently developed for such an undertaking.
Zoox Actively Hiring from Tesla
Despite this assessment, Zoox appears to be actively seeking expertise from Tesla. The Amazon-owned company recently announced on LinkedIn the hiring of Zheng Gao as Director of Hardware Engineering.
Gao previously held a significant position at Tesla, dedicating eight years to the company and leading the Autopilot hardware engineering team.
Before joining Tesla, Gao spent nine years at Apple, further demonstrating his extensive experience in the technology sector.
Significance of Gao’s Departure
Zheng Gao’s move from Tesla is particularly noteworthy given the company’s ambitions to release a fully unsupervised iteration of its Full Self-Driving software.
Currently, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system necessitates constant human supervision, requiring drivers to maintain their hands on the wheel and be prepared to assume control at any moment.
The recruitment of a leader from Tesla’s Autopilot team suggests Zoox is bolstering its own autonomous driving capabilities.
This strategic hiring could position Zoox as a strong competitor in the rapidly evolving robotaxi market.
