Cybertruck Recall Initiated Due to Exterior Trim Issue

Tesla has announced a recall affecting approximately 46,000 Cybertrucks currently on the road. This action is being taken due to a potential issue with an exterior steel trim panel located on the side of the windshield.

Potential Hazard Identified by NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) detailed in a recent filing that this trim piece is susceptible to detaching while the vehicle is in operation. Such detachment presents a potential safety risk to both the driver and other road users.

Tesla first became aware of this issue in early January. Since then, the company has received 151 warranty claims specifically related to the separation of this panel. Importantly, no crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of this defect, according to the NHTSA filing.

Root Cause and Corrective Action

The problem stems from the “structural adhesive” used to secure the panel. This adhesive is prone to “environmental embrittlement,” leading to its failure.

Tesla will rectify the issue for affected Cybertruck owners at no cost. The repair involves applying a “different structural adhesive” that is resistant to environmental factors. Additionally, a nut will be used to mechanically “clamp” the steel panel to the vehicle’s frame.

Eighth Recall for Cybertruck

This recall marks the eighth for the Cybertruck. While the vehicle is currently exceeding sales figures for other electric trucks, it hasn't yet met the initial sales expectations set by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Previously, many issues were addressed through over-the-air software updates. However, some problems, like this one, necessitate physical service.

Prior Instances of Parts Detachment

Two earlier recalls also involved components becoming loose. In April 2024, a recall was issued due to a throttle pedal cover that could detach and potentially cause the pedal to become stuck at full throttle.

A second recall in June 2024 concerned a trim piece on the truck bed, which was prone to coming loose due to inadequate adhesive.

Initial Investigation and Subsequent Action

Despite the history of adhesive failures, the initial investigation by Tesla following the first complaint regarding the windshield panel did not reveal significant concerns. An “engineering study” involving inspection and pull tests showed “no detections of separation.”

However, after the NHTSA contacted Tesla on February 21 with a customer complaint, the company conducted a more thorough review of social media and service records. This deeper investigation led to the decision to issue the recall on March 11.
