Tesla & Electrify Expo: EV Test Drives All Weekend

Electrify Expo Launches Extended EV Demo Program
Electrify Expo, a company dedicated to educating the public about electric vehicles through festivals across the United States, is introducing a new initiative. This program allows individuals to experience owning an EV firsthand by taking a vehicle home for an entire weekend.
Tesla is the inaugural partner in this venture, with Electrify Expo CEO BJ Birtwell anticipating further collaborations with other automotive brands in the coming months.
A No-Pressure EV Experience
“This provides attendees of Electrify Expo with a unique opportunity to evaluate an electric vehicle without any sales pressure,” Birtwell explained to TechCrunch. “They can integrate the vehicle into their daily routines and determine if it genuinely suits their lifestyle.”
Often, a first-time experience behind the wheel of an EV is a pivotal factor in a consumer’s decision to switch from traditional internal combustion engines. Demand for such opportunities is demonstrably high.
Consumer Interest in EV Test Drives
Recent data from Consumer Reports indicates that approximately half of all U.S. consumers express interest in test-driving an electric vehicle.
The new “Electrify Weekender” program will initially be available to attendees of the Los Angeles festival, beginning June 21. Participants must possess a valid driver’s license and current auto insurance.
Program Rollout and Refinement
Birtwell intends to utilize the Los Angeles launch as a pilot phase. This will allow for the identification and resolution of any logistical challenges before expanding the program to subsequent festivals in cities like Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Dallas.
Potential Benefits for Tesla
For Tesla, the Electrify Weekender program represents a potential avenue for reaching prospective customers who may be unfamiliar with the brand or harbor reservations. This could prove particularly valuable given recent challenges, including an aging vehicle lineup, increased market competition, and reputational concerns surrounding CEO Elon Musk.
Tesla has not yet publicly commented on the program.
Building on Existing Demo Success
Birtwell views the Electrify Weekender program as a logical progression from the existing EV demonstrations offered at the festivals. While these demonstrations are typically brief, lasting around 8 to 10 minutes, they have consistently proven effective in converting attendees into EV purchasers.
The Festival as an "Auto Mall 2.0"
“Our festival attendees are often actively comparing various electric cars and trucks,” Birtwell stated. “They treat our event as a modern iteration of an auto mall, allowing them to experience different vehicles and determine their preferences.”
This hands-on experience is particularly impactful for consumers already nearing a purchase decision.
Addressing Dealership Pressure
While many car manufacturers offer extended test drive programs, Birtwell notes that these often involve pressure from local dealerships to finalize a purchase. He anticipates that Electrify Expo will serve as a neutral intermediary, mitigating this pressure and attracting consumers who might not otherwise participate in such a test drive.
Birtwell projects that thousands of individuals will take advantage of the Electrify Expo offer.
Expanding EV Adoption
“To achieve widespread EV adoption beyond the current 50% of the population, we must appeal to a broader audience,” Birtwell emphasized. “This includes specifically targeting consumers who are both curious and skeptical about electric vehicles.”
