Grace Tao, a Tesla vice president, revealed that the company is considering entirely new products engineered from the outset for the Chinese market. She shared this information with 21st Century Business Herald during the recent Shanghai auto show. These China-developed vehicles are also planned for global distribution, she indicated.
Public Protest Highlights Quality Issues
During the same automotive event, a woman publicly protested at Tesla’s exhibit. She stood on top of a vehicle and voiced accusations of defective brakes. Authorities later detained the individual for damaging the car. Tesla responded on the Weibo platform, stating the vehicle’s accident was due to excessive speed, not a manufacturing defect.
Widespread Online Support for Protester
Despite Tesla’s explanation, videos of the protest circulated widely online, garnering considerable sympathy. Numerous users shared their own experiences with Tesla vehicles and reported similar problems. The hashtag “Tesla stand turned into a stage for defending rights” accumulated over 220 million views on Weibo within just 48 hours.
Tesla's Response and Communication Challenges
“From the beginning, we have been open to collaborating with national and independent third-party organizations to thoroughly investigate the issues raised by the public,” stated Tesla China in a Weibo post. “Our goal is to achieve consumer reassurance and understanding.”
The company acknowledged potential shortcomings in its communication with customers. Furthermore, Tesla stated it cannot dictate how customers choose to resolve their concerns.
Tesla's Position in the Chinese Market
Similar to its popularity in Western countries, Tesla has cultivated a strong following in China. Alongside Apple, it represents one of the few American technology companies that have successfully established a significant presence in the Chinese market. Last year, Tesla shipped approximately 500,000 vehicles worldwide, with China accounting for 20% of its total revenue.
Growing Competition from Domestic Brands
However, Tesla is facing increasing competition from emerging Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. Well-funded startups like Xpeng, Nio, and Li Auto, along with established automakers partnering with technology companies such as Huawei, are vying for market share. Vehicles designed and built in China are resonating with consumers who prioritize domestic brands.
Increased Government Scrutiny
Adding to the challenges, the Chinese government is intensifying its oversight of Tesla. In January, regulators summoned the company to address quality concerns, following a recall of several tens of thousands of vehicles. The Wall Street Journal reported in March that the government restricted Tesla vehicle use within military facilities due to national security concerns. Elon Musk subsequently stated his company would be closed if its vehicles were found to be used for espionage.
