Tesla Reaches $500 Billion Valuation - A Historic Milestone

A significant increase in Tesla’s stock value has resulted in the company exceeding a market capitalization of $515 billion, representing a five-times growth since the beginning of the year.
Despite its historical price fluctuations, the stock has demonstrated continued volatility. However, following a low point earlier in the year during March, Tesla’s share price has consistently climbed, with a notable acceleration occurring in August. The company’s stock, increasing by 4.6% during morning trades to $545.62, has propelled its Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, to a prominent position on Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index. As of Tuesday, Musk’s wealth had grown by $7.24 billion, surpassing $128 billion. Currently, only Jeff Bezos of Amazon has a higher net worth.
Recent news regarding Tesla’s inclusion in the S&P 500 index in December has contributed to the rise in its share value over the last week. Since Friday, the company’s market capitalization has increased by over $52 billion – an amount comparable to the valuation of almost one and a half Ford Motor Co. companies.
The S&P Dow Jones Indices communicated on November 16th that Tesla will formally become part of the benchmark index before the start of trading on December 21st, placing the electric vehicle manufacturer alongside established leaders such as Apple, Berkshire Hathaway, and Microsoft.
Upon its inclusion in the S&P 500, Tesla will rank among the index’s most highly valued companies. The impact of its weighting will be substantial enough that S&P DJI is considering whether to incorporate the stock at its full float-adjusted market capitalization weight immediately or in two separate phases.
Tesla’s addition to the S&P 500 is more than just a recognition of its success. The inclusion provides concrete financial advantages, as investment funds that mirror the index will be required to purchase Tesla shares. Given the current increase in share prices, this will likely necessitate the sale of other holdings by investors to accommodate the new investment.
