Tesla Sales Decline: Second Year of Falling Numbers

Tesla's Q2 Vehicle Deliveries Reflect Ongoing Sales Challenges
During the second quarter of the current year, Tesla reported delivering 384,122 vehicles. This concludes what has been a challenging quarter for the company, as efforts continue to restore sales momentum to the levels observed in the previous year.
Sales Decline and Potential Underperformance
The delivered quantity signifies a 13.5% decrease compared to the 384,122 vehicles Tesla delivered during the corresponding quarter of 2024. Consequently, Tesla faces a considerable possibility of falling short of its total sales figures achieved in 2024.
Should this occur, it would represent the second consecutive year of declining sales for Tesla – a notable shift considering the company’s prior projections of a 50% annual growth rate in deliveries.
Q1 Comparison and External Factors
This quarter’s sales performance showed only a marginal improvement over the first quarter, which had been Tesla’s weakest delivery period in over two years.
Notably, this was the first complete quarter of sales activity following CEO Elon Musk’s increased involvement with the Trump administration, an event that triggered nationwide “Tesla Takedown” protests.
Production Adjustments and Staffing
Musk has previously attributed the lower sales figures in the first quarter, in part, to temporary production halts across all Tesla factories. These shutdowns were implemented to facilitate preparations for the launch of the updated Model Y.
While no similar planned production adjustments were in place during the second quarter, reports from Business Insider indicated that some personnel involved in the Model Y and Cybertruck production lines were asked to take several days of leave in late May.
Upcoming Financial Report
The financial ramifications of this difficult quarter will be detailed on July 23, when Tesla releases its official earnings report.
Leadership Changes and New Initiatives
Recent developments include the reported dismissal of Omead Afshar, a longtime advisor to Musk who oversaw manufacturing and sales operations in the U.S. and Europe as Vice President.
With Musk dedicating more time to Tesla and his other ventures following his work with the Trump administration, the company has initiated a limited rollout of its anticipated Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
Bloomberg News has also reported that Musk is assuming direct responsibility for Afshar’s former sales role.
Industry-Wide Trends in EV Sales
The challenges faced by Tesla are not isolated, as other automotive manufacturers are also experiencing difficulties in moving electric vehicles. Ford, for example, announced a 31% year-over-year decline in U.S. electric vehicle sales this week.
Even Hyundai and Kia, which initially saw success with their EVs in the U.S. market, reported sales decreases during the second quarter.
General Motors, however, defied this trend, achieving year-over-year growth in U.S. EV sales thanks to the introduction of new and enhanced models.
Sales Incentives and Model Upgrades
Over the past two years, Tesla has implemented various strategies to stimulate sales. These include significant price reductions in both domestic and international markets.
The company has also offered multiple promotions featuring low-interest financing rates and implemented minor upgrades across its model lineup, with the Model Y SUV receiving a particularly noticeable redesign.
Future Model Plans
Tesla has been hinting at the development of “more affordable” models, described as streamlined versions of the Model Y and Model 3. Production was initially projected to begin in the first half of the current year, but the company has not yet confirmed whether this timeline was met.
Musk previously discontinued plans for a $25,000 vehicle based on the next-generation platform intended for Tesla’s dedicated robotaxi vehicle, the Cybercab, which remains in the prototype stage.
