Waymo Introduces Teen Accounts in Phoenix

Waymo has begun offering accounts specifically for teenagers within families located in Phoenix. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to grow its user base and integrate younger individuals into the world of autonomous transportation.

Similarities to Existing Ride-Hailing Services

The teen accounts offered by Waymo mirror those available through Uber. Parents can link a teen's profile to their existing Waymo One account if the teenager is between the ages of 14 and 17. This allows teens to independently request rides while simultaneously sharing their trip status with their parents.

Potential Benefits for Parents

Offering autonomous vehicle transport for children could alleviate parental concerns. Some parents may be hesitant to allow their children to ride with unfamiliar drivers, even those vetted by ride-hailing companies like Uber.

Furthermore, in states like California, where background checks are mandated for drivers transporting minors, autonomous vehicles could potentially streamline the process by removing some regulatory hurdles.

Trust in AI Safety is Key

However, the acceptance of this service hinges on parental confidence in the safety of AI-driven vehicles.

Addressing Safety Concerns

Beyond the core safety of the technology, other potential risks arise when considering unaccompanied teenage passengers. Despite training programs implemented by Uber and Lyft to identify and prevent human trafficking, instances of abuse have occurred where perpetrators have exploited the system to target minors.

Waymo's Verification and Support Systems

TechCrunch inquired with Waymo regarding its methods for verifying the familial relationship between the adult account holder and the linked teenager. They also asked about the procedures in place should additional passengers enter the vehicle during a teen's ride.

A Waymo spokesperson did not address the verification query directly. However, they emphasized that safety is the company’s paramount concern. This is demonstrated by the availability of specially trained support agents who can assist young riders 24/7 and contact parents for support when necessary.

Reducing Teen Traffic Accident Risk

In a recent press release, Waymo highlighted the potential of robotaxis to provide a safer transportation option for teenagers, addressing the statistically higher risk of traffic accidents faced by this age group.

Expansion Plans Beyond Phoenix

While the initial rollout is limited to Phoenix, Waymo intends to expand teen account access to other cities beyond California where the Waymo app is operational. Currently, Waymo operates commercial robotaxi services through the Uber app in Austin and Atlanta. Plans are in place to launch in Miami this year and Washington, D.C., in 2026.

The company also indicated that it may explore enabling teen access through partnerships with networks like Uber in the future.
