Tatum: Simplifying Blockchain Development with a Unified Platform

Introducing Tatum, a startup focused on blockchain infrastructure aiming to significantly streamline the process of creating blockchain-based products. The company provides a platform-as-a-service solution, eliminating the need for developers to independently manage nodes or master the intricacies of individual blockchain client interactions. Tatum is currently showcasing its capabilities at TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield during TechCrunch Disrupt.

The Growing Complexity of Blockchain Development

Initially, blockchain development presented a relatively straightforward path. However, the landscape has become increasingly complex with the proliferation of new blockchains. Currently, numerous distinct blockchains exist, including well-known examples like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Stellar, and Litecoin.

Direct interaction with a blockchain typically requires running a client on a server. This involves setting up a Linux server, installing the necessary software package, and initiating the client. Once operational, a node allows querying the blockchain, initiating transactions, and deploying decentralized applications – or dapps – built on smart contracts.

Challenges of Multi-Blockchain Support

Developing a product that supports multiple blockchains and various cryptoassets presents a significant hurdle. Each blockchain client operates differently, demanding a fresh learning curve and customized implementation for each one. Different clients utilize unique commands and return data in varying formats.

Existing Solutions and Their Limitations

Several companies are addressing these challenges. Cloud hosting providers, such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, offer managed node services, relieving developers of server management responsibilities. However, their blockchain support is often limited, and a deep understanding of blockchain technology remains essential.

Other solutions take a further step by managing nodes and providing access through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This approach simplifies blockchain interaction, resembling the use of REST APIs common in Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products. Companies like Alchemy and Infura, for example, facilitate easier Ethereum development.

Tatum’s Unique Approach: Blockchain Agnosticism

Tatum distinguishes itself by extending beyond Ethereum. The platform allows developers to utilize a consistent set of API calls across a multitude of blockchains. Mastering the process of sending assets between wallets with Tatum translates directly to doing so across twenty different blockchains.

“Blockchain is like the internet in 1997. We’re trying to bring the developer experience that developers have today to the blockchain space,” explains Jiri Kobelka, Tatum’s co-founder and CEO.

Code Once, Deploy Everywhere

Tatum empowers developers to write code once and deploy it across various blockchains. If a new blockchain emerges as more suitable for smart contracts, developers can readily adapt their decentralized applications by reusing significant portions of their existing codebase.

The startup maintains a blockchain-agnostic stance, avoiding commitment to any single blockchain. Developers can leverage Tatum to build a wide range of applications, including crypto wallets, exchanges, NFT marketplaces, in-game NFT assets, and decentralized identity solutions. Currently, over 10,000 developers are utilizing Tatum, with NFT-related projects accounting for 60% to 70% of the platform’s usage.

Built-in Compliance and Expertise

Jiri Kobelka brings a strong background in banking infrastructure to Tatum. “I’ve spent over 15 years in banking as a technical core banking expert,” he notes. This expertise has led to the development of a built-in compliance engine, enabling developers to onboard customers from diverse countries while adhering to local regulations.

Ultimately, Tatum broadens access to blockchain development for developers accustomed to web development and API-driven integrations. Considering the growing interest in blockchain technology, Tatum is poised to become a prominent development platform for the next wave of blockchain products.
