Tapbots Phoenix App: A New Bluesky Client

A New Bluesky App is Coming from the Makers of Ivory

A new application for the Bluesky social network is currently under development by Tapbots, a well-known creator of iOS apps. The company, recognized for its successful Mastodon client Ivory – which evolved from the earlier Tweetbot – is preparing to release an app named Phoenix.

Designed for Bluesky’s Expanding User Base

Tapbots announced the upcoming app via a post on Bluesky, sharing a website that previews Phoenix. The launch is anticipated to occur later this summer, catering to Bluesky’s growing community of over 32 million users.

Continued Support for the Fediverse

Tapbots clarified that their focus on a Bluesky client does not signify a departure from the fediverse, also known as the open social web. However, development on Ivory will be temporarily reduced in pace as resources are allocated to the new project.

Ivory: A Popular Mastodon Alternative

Launched in 2023, Ivory successfully replicated the user interface and many features of Tweetbot, providing an alternative to Mastodon’s native application. Ivory integrates with ActivityPub, the protocol that powers numerous federated social apps.

The Difference in Protocols

These apps include Mastodon itself, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Meta’s Threads, and Flipboard. Bluesky, in contrast, is built upon a distinct protocol known as the AT Protocol (or atproto).

The Shift from Twitter

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and its subsequent rebranding as X, a significant number of former Twitter users migrated to platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky. This division of users presented a challenge for Tapbots, impacting revenue generation with a single application.

The Need for Dual Support

“To ensure our continued success as a company, supporting both networks is essential,” Tapbots explained on their website. “Relying solely on Mastodon is not a viable long-term strategy.”

Why a Dedicated App for Bluesky?

The decision to create a separate app for Bluesky users, rather than integrating both networks into one, was made to optimize the user experience. A cross-posting feature is planned to allow users to maintain a presence on both social networks.

Impact on Ivory Development

Unfortunately, the development of Ivory will be slowed while the team concentrates on launching Phoenix. The company acknowledges that full development of Ivory cannot continue simultaneously with the launch of a new app.

Future Development Plans

“We didn’t begin Phoenix development until after releasing Ivory v2.3,” the website states. “Once Phoenix is released, development will proceed concurrently, and both apps will receive the substantial improvements we have planned.”

Initial Reporting

The initial report regarding Phoenix’s launch was published by MacStories.

Potential Monetization Strategy

While the monetization strategy for Phoenix has not been officially announced, it is likely to follow a subscription model similar to Ivory’s. This involves a free app with in-app purchases unlocking premium features. Currently, Ivory costs $1.99 monthly or $14.99 annually.

Alpha Phase and Launch Timeline

Phoenix will first enter a limited public alpha phase before its full launch in the summer of 2025.
